New photos and video have emerged from the set of The Last of Us, the HBO live-action adaptation of the hit video game. The set leaks will likely please fans, as they feature stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) in costume and filming a scene. The series is currently shooting in downtown Calgary, Alberta, in western Canada. ComingSoon.net was among the first to report on the photos and video.
The photos show Pedro Pascal and Ramsey sneaking around downtown Calgary, which may be standing in for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a key location in the game. They are with two unidentified actors, also in costume. Fans are surmising that they are likely the characters Sam and Henry, two brothers the pair meet while in Pittsburgh. The images were first posted online by Twitter user “Green Thing.” This tweet features the actors with a look at the video game characters they are portraying.
Video taken from the same set location by Twitter user “The Last of Us Updates” shows a scene being filmed. It features Pedro Pascal and Ramsey, as well as the two unidentified actors, sneaking around downtown Calgary, hiding behind cars to avoid detection. It is not clear from the video who they are hiding from, but it is likely the infected creatures, who have overrun the city, according to the video game.
Twitter user Naughty Dog Info may have figured out the identity of one of the actors seen in the pictures with Pedro Pascal. They speculate that it could be actor Lamar Johnson in the photos, playing the character of Henry. On an interesting side note, both Bella Ramsey and HBO recently followed the actor on Instagram.
The series is based on the 2013 video game sensation by Naughty Dog, which follows Joel and Ellie, two survivors of an apocalyptic plague that has destroyed civilization and turned many into cannibalistic creatures. Pedro Pascal plays Joel, a smuggler trying to get teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to a safe zone, some 20 years after the pandemic first turned the world upside-down. In their perilous journey across the United States, the pair have to traverse a wilderness filled with murderous survivalists and cities populated by the infected. If you haven’t played the game, we suggest not checking out Pedro Pascal’s reaction to certain events from the latest game, as it may spoil things for you.
Although HBO and Naughty Dog have been tight-lipped about details of the show’s production, fans and internet sleuths studying set pictures have been able to surmise that the first season will encompass the events of the entire first video game. The Hollywood Reporter, however, is reporting that elements from the second video game may be included as well. In an instance of art imitating life, the series has seen significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. HBO has given a 2023 premiere window for the series, although a specific date has not been announced. Production has also had to work around Pedro Pascal, who is also shooting the new season of The Mandalorian.
As you might expect, the series is being over-scrutinized by fans, who have been pushing for a faithful adaptation of the beloved game. Some criticized the casting of Pedro Pascal as Joel, hoping for an actor who more closely resembled the original video game character. They were. however, generally pleased with the casting of Ramsey, who is an almost dead-ringer for Ellie. Ramsey proved her acting mettle in Game of Thrones, where she played the fan-favorite Lyanna Mormont. The series is co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who wrote the original game, which made fans hopeful that HBO wasn’t going to change what made the original game so great.
The series will also star Gabriel Luna, who played the memorable villain in Terminator: Dark Fate, as Tommy Miller, Nico Parker (Dumbo) as Joel’s daughter Sarah, and Anna Torv, star of the cult-hit series Fringe, as Tess, a smuggler friend of Pedro Pascal’s Joel.
Fans were excited to see that joining Pedro Pascal is Merle Dandridge (The Flight Attendant) who plays the live-action version of Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies resistance group, a character she voiced in the original video game. Also starring in the series is Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Murray Bartlett as Frank, and Con O’Neill as Bill. Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman will also appear.
