Pedro Pascal is about to add another character in a huge franchise to his resume with The Last of Us, the HBO adaptation of the critically acclaimed game series. After being a breakout character in Game of Thrones, Narcos, the Star Wars universe, the DC Extended Universe, and the Nic Cage-verse, any new Pedro Pascal role has a lot to live up to. However, we have some high hopes for the epic scale of The Last of Us, and HBO just released some of the first footage from the series as part of a sizzle reel of new shows. Check it out:
In this HBO video, we see Pedro Pascal as Joel trudging through snow with Bella Ramsey’s Ellie walking behind him. In the universe of The Last of Us, a mysterious outbreak of a mutant fungus has destroyed the United States, creating a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland populated by desperate survivors, totalitarian camps, and the Infected, humans who contracted the fungus and become violent, mindless monsters. Pedro Pascal’s character is a smuggler who is tasked with escorting Ellie to a safe place; it turns out that Ellie is somehow immune to the fungus and perhaps the key to creating an antidote. One can expect the HBO adaptation of the series to truck in the same bleak atmosphere and tragedy as the game, and the few scenes we see here certainly back that up.
First, we see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey walking through a deserted landscape, followed by an aerial shot of the snow-covered bridge that emphasized the barrenness of the world. A voiceover from Bella Ramsey tells us how she has already experienced tragedy and death in her short life so far, followed by a clear shot of Pedro Pascal flatly telling her that she does not know what loss is. By the end of the show, he will probably have changed his thoughts on this, but we can let the narrative get there in time. There is a brief flash of Nick Offerman, who plays a survivalist named Bill, and an even briefer shot of the fungus growing over a concrete wall. All in all, it is a good introduction to a series that undoubtedly will put Pedro Pascal through the wringer.
Aside from Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us, the sizzle reel is promoting an impressive number of new and returning series, including critical and popular hits like Succession, the Game of Thrones prequel The House of the Dragon, and Hacks. It is an interesting time for HBO to be so heavily promoting its slate of new programming, considering that its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery seems hellbent on canceling series left and right. Presumably, the majority of these shows have already been produced and are ready to air, though that does not seem to be the saving grace that you might think. The Pedro Pascal adaptation of The Last of Us is reportedly one of the most expensive television series ever produced, so we will just have to see whether HBO decides to keep it around.
