The minds behind the Captain Marvel film, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, are filming a new movie on location in Oakland. Pedro Pascal, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian, will be starring in Freaky Tales, which Deadline reports will tell four interconnected stories that take place in 1987 Oakland. The stories are based on Ryan Fleck’s childhood in the city and will weave historical and fictional events together.
In addition to Pedro Pascal, Freaky Tales will also star Ben Mendelsohn and Jay Ellis, and co-star Jack Champion, Angus Cloud, Dominique Thorne, Keir Gilchrist, and Michelle Farrah Huang. The directors also lined up a who’s who of notable Oakland personalities and celebrities, both in the movie and behind the scenes. Oakland native Too$hort, whose song inspired the movie’s title, will be co-executive producing, and Raphael Saddiq, also from Oakland, will be in charge of the music for the film.
One set for the movie includes a store called “Late Night Video” that is nestled in one downtown Oakland city block next to present-day businesses, including the Fox Theater. The crew of the Pedro Pascal-led Freaky Tales hasn’t said much about what the movie is about, but it is filming in various locations throughout Oakland and is projected to finish that phase in January.
All that is known of the plot is that it “is comprised of four interconnected stories each featuring distinct characters, real-life locations and noteworthy historical events (some real, some imagined).”
Pedro Pascal’s credits from before Freaky Tales include some high-profile and well-known roles. Backed by a variety of television roles and small movie parts, he shot to fame playing Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of Game of Thrones. He then grew in popularity as Javier Peña on the action crime drama Narcos and most recently plays the titular character of the Disney+ Star Wars show The Mandalorian.
However, Pedro Pascal has also been in movies besides Freaky Tales. He played American agent Whiskey in The Kingsmen sequel, The Golden Circle, as well as Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984. He recently starred as an enthusiastic “Nick Cage” superfan in the madcap Nicolas Cage crime comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Before Pedro Pascal showed up to the set of Freaky Tales, he was wrapping up the filming of the HBO video game-based series The Last of Us, which also stars another Game of Thrones alum, Bella Ramsey (the two never did a scene together on the fantasy series, however). He also has a role in another movie in production currently, called The Uninvited. Another movie and another television series follow for the busy celebrity.
To keep up with Pedro Pascal ahead of the release of Freaky Tales, fans can catch his work all over the different streaming services. The Mandalorian is on Disney+, while Game of Thrones and Wonder Woman 1984 are on HBO Max. The Starz Channel on Amazon Prime is showing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Narcosairs exclusively on Netflix.
