Peacemaker Season 2 In the Works
More Peacemaker is on the way!
This article is more than 2 years old
With the first season of Peacemaker not even in the books yet, it looks like the creators are already contemplating a Peacemaker Season 2. In a recent interview with Deadline, James Gunn expressed interest in continuing with the fun and violent HBO Max series. You may or may not be burned out on the superhero genre by now, but even so, Peacemaker might bring you back in.
You can always count on James Gunn to remix and refresh the superhero formula in a way that feels unique and that actually feels like the creator’s voice, as opposed to some of the homogeny you might get from other superhero projects. Guardians of the Galaxy is still one of the best Marvel movies, and you instantly feel the direction from James Gunn the minute Peter Quill/Star-Lord bursts onto the screen in a dance montage to “Come and Get Your Love.” Gunn brought that same energy to DC, with his revamped take on the Suicide Squad. The success and warm response to 2021’s The Suicide Squad led to the Peacemaker spin-off which now might bring us to Peacemaker Season 2 if all goes well.
If you missed 2021’s The Suicide Squad, it brought back some of the characters and the core concept of the less successful 2016 Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer. In The Suicide Squad (the The is an important distinction) we see characters like Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg, and Captain Boomerang return under the watch of Amanda Waller. The squad consists of criminals who can shorten their sentence if they perform black-ops missions for the government. If they go off course and disobey their orders, they get blown up by the chip in their brain. New characters along for the ride include Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and of course, Peacemaker. Peacemaker, portrayed by John Cena, was a fan-favorite and James Gunn felt like there was more story to tell with the character, which leads us to the Peacemaker show.
Peacemaker picks up where we left the character after The Suicide Squad. John Cena’s titular character is once again recruited for black ops missions to take on mysterious enemies known as butterflies. The show also stars Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, and Dee Bradley Baker as a CGI eagle. It’s great. Currently, the show is on its fifth episode, with more episodes releasing every Thursday on HBO Max. The critical reception, audience reception, and numbers that it’s doing on HBO Max are making Peacemaker Season 2 seem more and more likely. And if James Gunn is on board, it’s likely that everyone else will be too.
While the ink isn’t dry on a Peacemaker season 2 renewal, these things tend to move pretty fast when a show is a runaway success. At the very least, people are going to be clamoring to see that intro song again, or maybe even a newly choreographed number in the next season. If you haven’t checked out Peacemaker for yourself yet, do yourself a favor. We loved it, and you probably will too.
