The Marvel Cinematic Universe is at an interesting point in its timeline right now. There is set to be a massive influx of new stories and characters coming down the pike in both movie and series form. But there is also a commitment to finishing off or at least continuing certain characters who were part of The Avengers timeline. It’s making for an intriguing intersection within the overall universe, and we are set to get some old favorites back in the mix sooner than later. One of them will be Paul Rudd who is returning as Ant-Man for a third movie in that franchise. While production for the film is apparently all but wrapped up this is the first look of him on the set of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which has been clouded in considerable secrecy around its plot points and characters.
This first look of Paul Rudd came from The Daily Mail and was posted on the @AntManNews Twitter feed. It’s a seemingly innocent set of photos of the actor. While the movie has been in various stages over the last couple of years, this is the first time we’ve actually seen Paul Rudd on set as part of the production. It’s a welcome sign considering the herky-jerky nature of the filming basically ever since the pandemic set in a couple of years ago. This will be the third movie in the Ant-Man franchise and Paul Rudd’s fifth appearance overall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after he showed up in Captain America: Civil War as well as Avengers: Endgame. The actor’s comedic tone and overall personality have been such a welcome addition to the MCU and he’s clearly helped the franchise embrace a certain levity with these movies. It’s a credit to the studio as a whole that they would cast a guy like Rudd in a superhero part, but the diminutive version of the character does help play well with his comedic sensibilities. It’s been just one of the many reasons the first two films totally worked.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was originally supposed to have come out this year, but significant production delays got in the way there. The plan was to film all the way back in the beginning of last year, but pandemic-related issues stood in the way and they delayed things until late 2021. That pushed the release into 2023. Evangeline Lilly had recently said that filming wrapped in November and that things had gotten tough on that front. Paul Rudd hasn’t commented on how production went in this sense.
Though Paul Rudd might play what seems like a “smaller” character in the MCU, this next movie is set to have major implications on the franchise as a whole. For starters, Bill Murray will have a role in the film, with rumors reporting that he’s some sort of villain. And Jonathan Majors will reprise his role of Kang the Conqueror, meaning we could get some serious Multiverse stuff going on as well. The movie will hit the big screen on July 28, 2023.
