Patrick Stewart Planning On More Star Trek?
Patrick Stewart has said that he would like to continue playing Picard after this season of the series wraps up
Star Trek: Picard may be heading into its third and final season on Paramount+, but its star Patrick Stewart may not be saying an official goodbye to the Star Trek franchise just yet. According to Deadline, Stewart and executive producer Alex Kurtzman are both leaving the door open to future Star Trek series in which Stewart may reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard once more.
“There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn’t close all of them,” Stewart said during a Paramount+ press tour.
Patrick Stewart previously played Jean-Luc Picard for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, in which he was the protagonist and captain of the USS Enterprise. He then appeared as the same character in the first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as four Star Trek feature films.
Picard takes place 20 years after the last of these feature films, Star Trek: Nemesis, in which Picard’s colleague and friend Data died. In the series, Picard is still much affected by Data’s death and spends the first season trying to fight for the rights of synthetic beings after being visited by one who may just be the daughter of Data, a male android.
Patrick Stewart was initially considered to play the role of Data himself when he auditioned for Star Trek in the 1980s, but everyone involved (other than Gene Roddenberry, who was convinced that Jean-Luc Picard should have lots of hair and be more of a stereotypical “tough guy” at first) was certain that Stewart was destined to sit in the captain’s chair.
It was a role that made Patrick Stewart famous, and the actor has maintained a close connection to the Star Trek franchise ever since. This is why he is still willing to keep playing any Picard role that may come up in the future.
Producer Alex Kurtzman implied that the possibility of another Picard appearance is also contingent on how well season three of Picard does with audiences. “If the show blows the doors off the place, and we’re certainly hoping it will as we’re very proud of season three, who knows,” he said, adding that “anything is possible.”
That season three is set to be a doozy too: almost the entire main cast of Star Trek: Next Generation will be joining Patrick Stewart in the last season of this Star Trek spinoff. LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and Marina Sirtis will all be coming back, as will Jeri Ryan from Star Trek: Voyager. She has already appeared in the new series.
The third season will premiere on February 16 on the Paramount+ streaming service, and fans are already very excited to see Patrick Stewart reunite with so many of his other Star Trek co-stars. It is set to be a very compelling end to the series that gives everyone the chance to see what some of their favorite characters have been up to after all this time.
And, according to Patrick Stewart, it will leave the door open for the actor to return to the Star Trek franchise in some form in the future, if we’re all lucky.
