Patrick Stewart Reveals Star Trek: Picard Movie On The Way, Here’s What We Know
Since the end of Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart has been talking about a film that would build on what the third and final season of that series started. He certainly seems to want to explore more about Picard’s character and story, which is understandable since he has lived with the character for over 35 years. The series also breathed a great deal of life into the former Enterprise captain, and that seems to have excited the imagination of the venerable Shakespearean actor.
Patrick Stewart has heard of a script that was in the works that would focus on the Picard character, and that he was told he should expect to receive the script within about a week.
Of course, Patrick Stewart is not the only one who would love to see a movie about Picard. Fans loved the third season of the series and have certainly been hungry for more. While promoting his memoir Making It So to Wired last year, Stuart remarked at some length that he believed there was a great deal more to explore in Picard’s character—glimmers that he had seen in the series that he thought could be pursued further.
But he also said that a new film should focus on the Next Generation ensemble as well, building on their reunion in the third season.
We wonder whether the Star Trek: Picard movie Stewart is talking about, the Star Trek: Legacy series that has been proposed by Terry Matalas and others since the end of Picard, and the Star Trek: Legacy film we have said we would like to see are all the same project.
At that time, Patrick Stewart said there had been no movement on the project despite his frequent mentioning of it to anyone who would listen. Since that time, though, the actor has given an interview on the podcast Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz wherein he gave listeners even more hope regarding a Picard film.
In that interview, he said he had only the night before heard of a script that was in the works that would focus on the Picard character, and that he was told he should expect to receive the script within about a week.
One thing Patrick Stewart hasn’t mentioned is the fact that Alex Kurtzman has expressed his desire for Star Trek to release a new film to Paramount+ every couple of years.
Of course, as Patrick Stewart knows well from his long years in theater, television, and film, scripts get written all the time, but each one holds a great deal of possibility.
For our part, we wonder whether the Star Trek: Picard movie Stewart is talking about, the Star Trek: Legacy series that has been proposed by Terry Matalas and others since the end of Picard, and the Star Trek: Legacy film we have said we would like to see are all the same project.
These films and series are all very closely adjacent and are building on exactly the same momentum and the same characters, so it’s possible that the script of which Stewart is to shortly be in receipt could be what fans are hoping for on all of these fronts.
One thing Patrick Stewart hasn’t mentioned is the fact that Alex Kurtzman has expressed his desire for Star Trek to release a new film to Paramount+ every couple of years. This opens up even more possibilities for any version of a movie that might feature Picard and his crew.
One way or another, we’re excited to see what future projects the amazing third season of Star Trek: Picard might be opening up as Stewart and the Next Generation cast have all shown their willingness to boldly go into Star Trek’s future.
