When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019 (shortly thereafter dropping the Fox part of the company name), Marvel fans were excited at the prospect of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four finally being able to team up with the Avengers. However, true fans know that while the fan-favorite character Deadpool is not technically a mutant, he was mutant adjacent enough to get lumped into the deal. The upcoming and highly anticipated next film starring Ryan Reynolds as the meta-aware assassin is still mysterious in terms of plot, but according to our trusted and proven sources, Patrick Stewart is being courted to appear in Deadpool 3. We can only assume that Patrick Stewart will be reprising the role of Professor Charles Xavier in Deadpool 3, but with this particular series of darkly comedic mutant adventures, anything could happen.

This makes a lot of sense in a number of ways. For one, Deadpool (the character) has always been on the outskirts of the X-Men universe, having derived his healing factor from some experiments on Wolverine. For another, the characteristically self-aware Ryan Reynolds version of Deadpool has always liked to make snide little comments about the X-Men in his movies, finally culminating with an array of X-cameos at the end of Deadpool 2. The team (which was a mixture of actors from various films in the franchise) prominently featured the young version of Professor X played by James McAvoy, so it feels very likely the next step is to get the Patrick Stewart Professor X in Deadpool 3.

If Patrick Stewart is returning to Deadpool 3 as Professor X, it will be his second appearance as the iconic character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper so far. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teased a very hyped appearance to the character in trailers, and while the character did ultimately appear, it was a multiversal variant of the mutant leader who got his neck broken by Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch in a shocking and grisly death scene. Patrick Stewart in Deadpool 3 could be returning as a similar kind of alternate reality version of the character, given that we do not yet know how mutants are going to be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He could also be showing in the same way that Hugh Jackman did in the end credits to Deadpool 2, by reusing old footage of the character reacting to Ryan Reynolds’ theoretically hilarious quips.

Of course, knowing how self-aware these Ryan Reynolds films like to be, it would not be entirely surprising for Patrick Stewart to show up in Deadpool 3 as himself, which is to say as the actor who plays the character. And while Patrick Stewart is known for his intense dignity and Shakespearian acting, any fan of the underrated animated show American Dad could tell you that he has a real talent for raunchy, shockingly dark comedy. However Patrick Stewart might end up appearing in Deadpool 3, this hopefully will not be the last we see of him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
