See Owen Wilson As The Greatest Painter Of All Time In First Look
Owen Wilson stars in Paint in which he looks much like famed painter Bob Ross
Owen Wilson channels Bob Ross in the first trailer for the upcoming comedy, Paint. While the protagonist has a different name, the clip sees the actor with the same hairstyle and calming tone as the famed art instructor. The film is based on the 2010 Blacklist screenplay of the same name and will be released by IFC Films on April 7th.
Written and directed by Brit McAdams, the Owen Wilson starrer follows a Bob Ross-looking character named Carl Nargle. After hosting the number one painting show in Vermont for decades, things get ugly when the network hires a younger artist to attract a different viewer demographic. The move triggers Carl’s hidden insecurities about his own artistic talents.
“You’re entitled to your favorite TV show. That’s what makes this country great,” a frustrated Carl admits in the trailer. However, he is later seen hurling a can of paint at a wall of artwork. Owen Wilson’s character is reminiscent of beloved television icon Bob Ross, who hosted The Joy of Painting on PBS from 1983 to 1994. He passed away in 1995 when he was 52 years old.
Starring alongside Owen Wilson as the Bob Ross-inspired Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle is Ciara Renée as Ambrosia. The cast also features the talents of Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root, Lucy Freyer, and Denny Dillon. Evander Duck Jr, Will Blagrove, and Ryan Czerwonko appear in supporting roles.
While Owen Wilson is made to look just like Bob Ross, the plot is not based on anything the real artist experienced. The fictional painter lives in Vermont, while the real one lived in Florida. There are also several other differences in the story to ensure that nobody gets sued. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is produced by Peter Brant and Sam Maydew.
Owen Wilson serves as executive producer, along with starring as the Bob Ross-like painter. Richard J. Bosner and Joel David Moore also handle producing duties. Paint has a few highly anticipated movies to compete with on its opening weekend. This includes The Pope’s Exorcist starring Russell Crowe, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and, Joyland – the first Pakistani film shortlisted for the Best Documentary Oscar.
The Wedding Crashers star currently portrays Mobius M. Mobius in the popular Marvel series, Loki. The show is set to return for its second season on Disney+ later this year. Owen Wilson’s other recent credits, which now include the Bob Ross-type painter story, are Secret Headquarters, Marry Me, and The French Dispatch.
Owen Wilson is also set to star in the Haunted Mansion reboot by director Justin Simien. Written by Katie Dippold, the story follows Gabbie and her 9-year-old son who move into a strangely affordable New Orleans mansion. But they soon discover that the place is much more than they bargained for.
The Owen Wilson movie, which will be released after the Bob Ross-like Paint film, also features Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Jared Leto, Danny DeVito, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
