Watch Optimus Prime Transform For The First Time In Transformers One

Chris Hemsworth just recently dropped another trailer for Transformers One, the upcoming animated Transformers movie telling the tale of the transformers before they were transformers, and before the war on Cybertron had ignited into a cataclysmic conflict. This new trailer shows the lesser-known Orion Pax transforming into an autonomous robotic organism known as Optimus Prime. Check out the trailer below:

Of course, this has many fans worried, considering that Transformers One changes some of the previously established lore, such as the origins of both Optimus Prime and Megatron.

The Transformers One trailer opens with Orion Pax and D-16 being mere worker bots without any transformative abilities, working the mines of Cybertron. Upon receiving a mysterious message, they embark on a quest to find the sender, only to reach an ancient bot who grants them the power of transformation. The cheerful tone of the movie quickly turns into an all-out war, as Orion Pax and D-16 seek to challenge and put an end to Cybertron’s decrepit caste system, slowly parting ways and evolving from brothers-in-arms to sworn enemies known as Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) and Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) in Transformers One

For those who aren’t as familiar with the narrative and lore, Orion Pax wasn’t a worker bot but a clerk in the Iacon Hall of Records. He became inspired by the words and ideas of a champion in illegal deathmatches, a gladiator by the name of Megatronus (originally named D-16). The latter left the gladiatorial arena and became not just a politician but also a mentor to Orion Pax.

…major discrepancies in Transformers One have some aspects of the fandom concerned, with many wondering what Paramount had done with their favorite IP.

Once in front of the High Council, Megatronus, who had shortened his name to Megatron, deemed a violent revolution necessary and arrogantly demanded to be named the next Prime. However, Orion, who had accompanied his master, also shared his vision, proposing a non-violent solution. Feeling betrayed by both the Council and Orion, Megatron started a civil war, while Primus turned Orion into Optimus Prime, the Last of the Primes—the origin story that significantly differs from that in Transformers One.

Obviously, the major discrepancies in Transformers One have some aspects of the fandom concerned, with many wondering what Paramount had done with their favorite IP. Well, they can’t do worse than Michael Bay, but considering just how great animated Transformers releases were, concerns regarding the newly introduced changes seem justified. With that said, the movie premiered at the Annecy Film Festival in June, where it earned a massive stranding ovation for its cast, which indicates quality, so the reasons for concern are, perhaps, unfounded.

The rest of us, however, will have to wait for Transformers One’s official release date, scheduled for September 20, 2024…

Not only that, but the fact that Paramount screened the film two months before its official release speaks volumes about the studio’s confidence in what they have, and critics aren’t short on praise for all aspects of the film. This includes massive praise for the film’s narrative—altered as it is—its cast, and even its animation style and animation quality.

The rest of us, however, will have to wait for Transformers One’s official release date, scheduled for September 20, 2024, to see exactly what all the hype is about—we admit, the first reactions are pretty promising.
