Marvel Fans Must Discover This Forgotten Robert Downey Jr. And Marisa Tomei Rom-Com
Only You is a movie that gets easily lost in the shuffle among other greater, more epic 1990s romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally. And that is a sad reality because both Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei are spectacular in this film, and their supporting actors, including Bonnie Hunt and Fisher Stevens, bring this adventure in the search for love together perfectly.
Civil War
I was recently rewatching Captain America: Civil War with my kid and noticing, once again, how much Tony Stark plays up his attraction to Aunt May. He makes references like “your exceptionally hot aunt” to Peter when they meet for the first time.
He flirts with May unabashedly in this film and again refers to “aunt hottie” in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which got me thinking about one of the 90’s movies the two made together, two decades ago — Only You (they also starred together in Chaplin)
A Psychic Prediction
In Only You, Tomei plays Faith Corvatch, a young woman who was told by a psychic that she would fall madly in love with her soul mate, whose name is Damon Bradley.
Years later, she is on the verge of marrying a simple, nerdy guy named Dwayne (John Benjamin Hickey), when she gets a random call about a man named, you guessed it, Damon Bradley, who is supposed to be in Venice, Italy.
She convinces her lifelong best friend, Kate (Hunt), who happens to be married to her brother, Larry (Stevens), to race off to Italy with her to find Bradley.
Damon Not Bradley
When she arrives in Italy, she runs into another American who tells her his name is Damon Bradley. They spend a lovely evening in Rome and fall into bed together. As this man kisses Faith, he confesses his name is not Damon Bradley but in fact Peter Wright.
This is the premise of Only You — should you fall in love with the person you fall in love with, or should you get hung up on ideas of fate, destiny, and what is “supposed” to be? Peter makes his case for living in the real world but Faith shakes him off, determined to find Bradley.
Love All Around
In order to stay with Faith, Peter decides to help her find Bradley and prove he’s nobody special. Meanwhile, Kate is being wooed by a charming Italian man named Giovanni, and her husband, who has been taking her for granted all these years, is going crazy back in the states.
Only You follows the wacky ups and downs of love for Faith, Kate, Peter, and Larry, urging us to fall in love with love and remember that our destiny is in our own hands.
