One Piece Remake Has Fans Losing Their Minds
Netflix is betting big on One Piece, as the streamer announced that a remake of the massively popular anime is currently in production.
The One Piece remake announcement was one of many made at Jump Festa 2024, but this announcement is possibly the most hype out of all of them. A release date for the remake has yet to be announced, but fans will undoubtedly be waiting with bated breath.
One Piece Remake Announced
As if a remake wasn’t exciting enough, the series is being produced by WIT Studio, which is best known for its work on hit anime like SPY X FAMILY and Attack on Titan.
The remake, titled The One Piece, will start from the beginning by adapting the East Blue Saga. The remake is also made in partnership with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co.
Original One Piece
One Piece is based on the manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda. The manga and anime follow the high seas adventures of Monkey D.
Luffy as he and his crew explore the world, battle fearsome foes, and seek out the titular “One Piece” treasure to achieve Luffy’s dream of becoming the Pirate King.
The ongoing Toei anime series has been running for over two decades, and there are currently over 1000 episodes.
Capitalizing On One Piece Live-Action
The One Piece remake is a shrewd move by Netflix, which is undoubtedly capitalizing off the massive success of its live-action One Piece adaptation.
The realm of live-action anime is full of failures, but Netflix managed to pull off the impossible and make something that pleased both fans and newcomers to the series.
While people just getting in through the live-action series might find 1000+ episodes of an anime daunting to catch up on, a fresh new take on the series would be a lot more palatable.
Fresh Dynamic Look
Even fans of the One Piece anime admit that the series has some pacing problems along with plenty of filler episodes.
Some fans have even worked to create an easier way to consume the series with the fanmade “One Pace” cut to reduce filler and recycled scenes.
Presumably, this remake would do the same while giving the series a dynamic, fresh coat of paint with Studio WIT’s fantastic animation.
Better Animation Possibilities
When the One Piece anime first started, Toei was also obviously working with a smaller budget, so the animation quality can definitely show its age for newcomers trying to get into the series.
With the cutting-edge animation that will be used in the One Piece remake, a lot of these problems will be solved. It remains to be seen if the original Japanese and English dub voice casts will be on board for the remake project.
Other Netflix Plans
In addition to the One Piece remake announcement, Netflix also announced that it will be adapting Oda’s Monsters 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation manga, which is being adapted for the first time.
Also, on Sunday, Netflix announced it will adapt another manga by Oda, Monsters 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation. Of course, Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation has also been greenlit for Season 2. Stay tuned for more news on this remake and other anime news.
