One Piece Breaks Two Huge Anime World Records

By Nina Phillips | Published

One Piece is a huge franchise. Despite first starting in the 90s, the anime and the manga are still ongoing. It’s no surprise that, because it’s still in production nearly 30 years later, it’s managed to break some records, including the Guinness World Records for most DVDs released by a serial anime TV program, and for the most copies published in the same comic book series by a single author.

Die-Hard Fans Will Need A Warehouse For Their DVDs

The 300th DVD set for One Piece is what broke the record and officially gave the series the Guinness World Record title for most DVDs released by a serial anime TV program. Though the announcement was made on August 11, 2024, the set was released about a month previous on July 3.

This DVD set encompasses episodes 1086 to 1088 of the anime. Though 300 episodes are impressive, considering One Piece is still ongoing, it looks like quite a few more DVDs will be released over time, making sure the record will be incredibly difficult to break.

109 Volumes Of Manga And Still Growing

It was in 2015 that the One Piece manga earned the other Guinness World Record for most copies published in the same comic book series by a single author. After being earned, it was confirmed again in 2022.

One Piece started in 1997 as a manga by Eiichiro Oda and is still ongoing. Currently, there are 109 volumes as of August 2024. The anime started in 1999, with over 1,000 episodes. Both versions of the series are still actively being released weekly.

Other Adaptations

One Piece

There are other adaptations of One Piece as well. On August 31, 2023, there was a live-action adaptation that has received much love. Additionally, WIT Studio (Spy x Family) is in the process of making a remake, even though the original One Piece series by Toei Animation (Sailor Moon) is still ongoing.

The One Piece anime features Mayumi Tanaka (Dragon Ball Z) voicing Luffy, Kazuya Nakai (Blue Exorcist) voicing Zoro, Hiroaki Hirata (Tiger & Bunny) voicing Sanji, Yuriko Yamaguchi (MegaMan NT Warrior: Axess) voicing Robin, Ikue Otani (Case Closed) voicing Chopper, Akemi Okamura (Natsume’s Book of Friends) voicing Nami amongst a slew of other amazing voice actors.

The One Piece Rundown

One Piece

The plot of One Piece is rather simple. The story follows a young boy, Luffy, who has dreamed of being a pirate since he was a little kid. When he’s old enough, he leaves his homeland to become a pirate, gathering up a crew eventually known as the Straw Hat Pirates as he searches for the legendary One Piece and strives to become the King of the Pirates.

During his journey, he comes to meet many other pirates and explores the world and all the unique islands that make up the world, all while fighting the Marines.
