The upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ is already making Star Wars history before the first episode even hits the platform. Composer Natalie Holt became the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project thanks to her contribution of a new theme for Obi-Wan.
This wouldn’t be the first time Holt teams up with Disney, as she created some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best music when she composed themes for the Loki series. She is also on deck to score a film on the other side of the comic book movie aisle when she works on DC’s Batgirl. In other words, Holt is staying busy with some of the biggest and most iconic film universes out there. However, the Star Wars accolade is likely extra-special, if for no other reason than the fact that Holt got to collaborate with the legendary John Williams for the Obi-Wan Kenobi music.
John Williams has composed some of the most rousing and iconic film scores of all time, with his work on Star Wars being some of his most notable and beloved. Themes like the “Star Wars (Main Title),” “The Imperial March,” and “Duel of the Fates” have forever been ingrained in movie-goers minds since they were first heard in theaters. Perhaps Holt’s contribution will join the hallowed halls of these compositions when her Obi-Wan Kenobi song hits the small screen.
The Disney+ Star Wars live-action series have already created quite a few memorable musical moments thanks to Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson‘s work on both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Now Natalie Holt has her chance to add to this success by providing a haunting theme for the exiled Obi-Wan. We won’t have to wait long to hear the work that Holt did for Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show is coming to Disney+ next month and will feature Ewan McGregor reprising the role he inherited from Alec Guinness and made his own in the prequel trilogy.
Obi-Wan Kenobi follows the Jedi after the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. In that movie, we saw Anakin Skywalker become the villainous Darth Vader, the mass execution of the Jedi Order, and Obi-Wan Kenobi whisking Anakin’s children to distant corners of the galaxy. The series finds Kenobi on Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker. As we’ve seen in previous Disney+ live-action Star Wars series, the show will introduce some live-action fan-favorite characters from the Clone Wars and Rebels animated shows. Namely, we’ll be seeing The Grand Inquisitor, which was the villainous spinning red lightsaber-wielding bald guy you can see in the teaser trailer. Fans may be more excited about the fact that Hayden Christensen will also be returning to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. The show also stars Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie. Deborah Chow directs.
You can see experience all the excitement of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi and hear the awesome music when it hits Disney+ on May 27.
