Nurse Jackie Sequel Series With Edie Falco Gets New Home
A Nurse Jackie sequel is coming with the original star attached, though it will be on a new platform. The follow-up to the popular show, which went off the air almost a decade ago, is in development for Amazon Prime. Details are still scant, but it will be a straightforward continuation of the show from the early 2010s.
Nurse Jackie
Nurse Jackie followed Jackie Peyton, a nurse dealing with a drug addiction along with the demands of working in an emergency room. Combining dark comedy with heavy personal drama, it was one of the defining shows of its era.
Running from 2009 to 20015, it won five Emmys during its original run with numerous nominations.
The Nurse Jackie sequel will pick up ten years after the original, with its protagonist no longer working as a nurse after the events of the original series. This clarifies the open-ended finale of the original, which closed out with Jackie overdosing and collapsing in the hospital, leaving her ultimate fate a mystery.
The announcement for the new show included references to new moral dilemmas for the character, though what they will be remains a mystery.
Edie Falco Returns
Actress Edie Falco will return as Jackie Peyton for the Nurse Jackie sequel, reprising one of her most well-known roles. Before her role as Jackie, Edie Falco was best known for her role in The Sopranos, as Tony’s wife Carmela Soprano. Flaco has acted in numerous films and TV shows, but she remains best known for her roles on those prestigious shows.
Cast And Crew
It’s unknown if anyone else from the original cast will be joining Falco for the Nurse Jackie sequel. The original had an extensive cast that included Eve Best, Merritt Wever, Haaz Sleiman, Peter Facinelli, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Devare Smith, Bobby Cannavale, Morris Chesnut, Stephen Wallem, and Betty Gilpin.
With such a large cast of beloved characters, hopefully, the new show will have at least a few returning characters.
Behind the scenes, the Nurse Jackie sequel will have some veteran writers to help bring the show back to its former glory.
Liz Flahive, known for her work on GLOW and Homeland, will be working with Abe Sylvia, known for Palm Royale and George & Tammy, as the new show’s head writers and executive producers. Edie Falco will be producing in addition to her starring role.
Amazon Prime
The original show aired on Showtime, and when it was initially announced the Nurse Jackie sequel was set to return to Showtime. However, that has changed with Amazon Prime being the new home for the follow-up series. While Showtime seems to have lost one of its established IPs it’s looking to resurrect other popular shows Dexter and Billions.
More News To Come
As of now, the Nurse Jackie sequel doesn’t have a release date and many details remain under wraps. But with Edie Falco’s return, there’s good reason for fans to be excited about the show’s return. If Amazon can recapture what made the original show great, they could have a hit show on their hands.
