The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big place and getting bigger all the time. With the slate of new movies and Disney+ shows always growing, they obviously need more actors and there is probably a lot of appeal to joining the single biggest cinematic franchise ever. According to our trusted and proven sources, the latest actor to join up is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in an as-yet-unknown Marvel project. However, there is quite a number of roles that we could see Game of Thrones’ own Jaime Lannister play. Let’s explore a few of the possibilities.
One of the most anticipated upcoming MCU projects is Fantastic Four, which has announced by Kevin Feige all the way back at the July 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, Spider-Man director Jon Watts has both joined the film and left and rumors are beginning to swirl about who will helm that project. We are going to go ahead and speculate that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau might have been cast as Marvel’s next Doctor Doom.
Though there are no plot details on Fantastic Four as of yet, Victor Von Doom has been a central character in the mythos for pretty much the entire modern history of Marvel Comics. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the dictator of Marvel’s Latveria could make sense on a lot of levels: one, he has the kind of non-specific European vibe that would work well for Victor Von Doom. Two, Game of Thrones gave him experience in playing a character who is both morally reprehensible and yet has a certain kind of nobility, which is definitely part of Doctor Doom’s whole thing. And three, prior to his scarring and donning his iconic armor, Doom is characterized as being extremely handsome, which Nikolaj Coster-Waldau undeniably is.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau could show up in any number of other Marvel roles. On the Disney+ side, Secret Invasion will undoubtedly have a number of parts that could use a recognizable TV actor who suddenly is revealed to be a Skrull Impostor. Alternately, Don Cheadle’s Armor Wars also needs a number of ambiguous sinister villains to appropriate Tony Stark’s Iron Man technology and fight War Machine. Who knows, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau could even pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of Jennifer Walter’s hapless dates in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, playing a fictionalized version of himself. We could go for that.
But still, our money is on Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Marvel’s next Victor Von Doom. The iconic villain was previously played by Julian McMahon in 2005’s Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He was also played by Toby Kebbell in the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four. Perhaps more than any other iconic superhero group, Fantastic Four has struggled to produce both critically and commercially successful film adaptations, so Marvel Studios will likely want to be careful with this one. But if you do need an actor to play a narcissistic, morally-conflicted European nobleman with shifting loyalties who is physically disfigured, you could do a lot worse than Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
