Exclusive: National Treasure Sequel With Nicolas Cage And Keanu Reeves Plot Revealed
We’re about to give you at least a couple of good reasons to say, “whoa.” According to our trusted and proven sources, not only is Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Benjamin Franklin Gates, but he’s bringing Keanu Reeves along with him. The long-awaited sequel National Treasure: Revenge of the Puzzlemaster is in development at Disney, with both Cage and Reeves in starring roles, and Brad Bird (Incredibles 2) in talks to direct.
Our sources say in the third National Treasure film, Nicolas Cage’s hero will be tasked with solving an intricate series of puzzles to prevent a legendary artifact from falling into the hands of a ruthless treasure hunter. We don’t know what the artifact will be or who will play the rival treasure seeker, but it is very tempting to speculate it’s Reeves who will be matching wits with Gates.
As a Hollywood leading man with a “nice guy” reputation that seems to somehow outshine even his screen work, Reeves doesn’t often play villains. That makes it that much more intriguing to muse he might play a bad guy opposite Nicolas Cage.
We’ve exclusively learned both Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves are attached to appear in National Treasure: Revenge of the Puzzlemaster, which is in development at Disney with Brad Bird in talks to direct.
One of Reeves’ few bad guy roles was as a serial killer in 2000’s The Watcher — a film which, as ScreenRant recalls, Reeves said he was tricked into starring in — and ask any deep diving movie nerd for an overlooked Reeves gem, and that thriller will likely be the first one to come up.
Considering we last saw Cage play Gates in 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets — and the cancellation of Edge of History after its first season — fans will no doubt be thrilled to learn the franchise is continuing.
Regardless of what role he takes in the sequel, Reeves is joining a franchise that has had a lot of question marks surrounding it the last few years. The release of Disney+’s streaming series National Treasure: Edge of History seemed to coincide nicely with Nicolas Cage’s revival, but at first there didn’t seem to be any plans of Cage returning to the franchise.
Nicolas Cage made a number of public comments, expressing doubt that he would ever work for another big studio like Disney again, but it didn’t take long before producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he had already discussed a third National Treasure film with Cage.
Considering we last saw Cage play Gates in 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets — and the cancellation of Edge of History after its first season — fans will no doubt be thrilled to learn the franchise is continuing.
Nicolas Cage And Franchises
National Treasure is something of an anomaly in Nicolas Cage’s acting career. As far as leading roles in live-action films are concerned, Cage has mostly steered away from anything resembling a franchise. Besides National Treasure, the only exceptions are the two pre-MCU Ghost Rider films, and his upcoming return to the part of arms dealer Yuri Orlov in Lords of War (a sequel to 2005’s Lord of War).
As soon as we have more word on Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves’ upcoming National Treasure: Revenge of the Puzzlemaster, we’ll make sure to update you.
