Our Nicolas Cage Superman Scoop Confirmed
Our exclusive scoop that Nicolas Cage will have a cameo as Superman in The Flash has been confirmed by director Andy Muschietti.
Superman will finally live in the way Tim Burton hoped 25 years ago, and we were the first ones to tell you. Back in April we exclusively reported that Nicolas Cage would make a cameo in the upcoming movie The Flash as Superman, the role he almost played in the canceled Superman Lives. Now director Andy Muschietti has confirmed our report while speaking to Esquire Middle East.
Muschietti seemed absolutely over the Moon telling Esquire about Nicolas Cage’s involvement, saying of the Renfield star, “Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it.” That sounds completely in-character for Cage who is known for, among other things, committing wholeheartedly to every part he accepts.
The Flash director didn’t reveal any plot details about Nicolas Cage’s cameo, but our sources told us Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will catch a glimpse of Cage’s Superman fighting a massive robotic spider. This makes sense considering producer Jon Peters was reportedly obsessed with involving a giant robot spider in Superman Lives (and, in fact, a giant robot spider would show up in the climax of another Peters-attached film, the 1999 flop Wild Wild West).
It’s only speculation, but it seems likely that Nicolas Cage’s version of Superman will be part of a number of alternate visions the titular hero of The Flash will witness. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed The Flash will reboot the cinematic narrative, and so will almost certainly give us plenty of shots of DC’s multiverse.
Just as The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover featured tons of cameos from current and past DC adaptation stars — even Burt Ward who played Robin in the 1960s Batman series — it would not be surprising to find a long list of cameos waiting for us in The Flash. Along with Nicolas Cage playing his would-be version of Superman, fans could very well be treated to cameos from stars of The CW’s Arrowverse, George Clooney‘s Batman, Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, Jim Carrey’s Riddler, and more.
For Nicolas Cage, getting even just a cameo as Superman is no doubt a joy. Along with being a comic book fan, Cage’s love for Superman in particular is well-known, prompting him to famously name one of his children Kal-El after the superhero’s Kryptonian origin.
While, for better or worse, Superman Lives never materialized, Cage has not suffered from a lack of comic book inspired roles. He played Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, in two films and voiced the hard-boiled variant Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Fans can catch their glimpse of Nicolas Cage as Superman, along with whichever other celebrities wind up making cameos, when The Flash finally premieres in theaters June 16.
