Just days after the surprise announcement of Nicolas Cage joining the cast of the upcoming Dracula adaptation, Renfield, it has been reported that a Marvel star is also set to star in the horror comedy. It has been revealed that Awkwafina, who recently made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will be starring alongside Cage and Nicholas Hoult in the upcoming film.
The news of Awkwafina joining the film has been reported by Deadline though information about what character she has signed on to play is being kept under tight wraps. It has been reported by The Wrap that she will most probably be seen as a cop in Renfield but the outlet offers no further details. No matter what role she will be playing in Renfield alongside Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult, given her supreme comedic flair, we are already anticipating her to give a rib-tickling performance. Till now, all we know is that Hoult is set to play the unhinged titular character while Cage will appear as his sinister master, Dracula.
The film is set to narrate the story of Dracula’s notorious henchman, Renfield. While details about the film’s storyline are rather sparse, if it is an honest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel Dracula, then Nicholas Hoult will be seen as an inmate in a lunatic asylum who suffers from hallucinations and delusions. As per the novel, his mental instability pushes him to eat live creatures as he hopes to attain immortality. It is later discovered that he was being manipulated by Count Dracula who wants Renfield to worship him. It remains to be seen how Nicolas Cage will be portraying the mighty vampire as unlike the source material, the film is expected to take place in the present day. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Renfield will be “a modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.”
Initially, Rocketman‘s Dexter Fletcher was supposed to direct the Nicolas Cage starrer when it was first announced in late 2019. But after years went by without any progress on the project, Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The Lego Batman Movie) was signed on to direct and produce the film. Renfield will be based on a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) while the story concept and outline come from Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead). It will be produced by Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst.
Currently, no tentative release date or details about when the film’s production will commence has been released. But given the lead cast’s hectic schedule at the moment, Renfield will probably not begin filming anytime soon. Nicolas Cage is engrossed in upcoming projects like the action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent where he will play a fictinalized version of himself alongside Pedro Pascal, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Hadish. He is also set to star in the upcoming action movie The Retirement Plan as well as two Western dramas: The Old Way and Butcher’s Crossing. As for Renfield’s prime protagonist, Nicholas Hoult is currently busy filming the dark comedy thriller The Menu opposite Anya Taylor-Joy.
