Nicolas Cage would not do a Star Wars project, because he's a Star Trek fan.

The Trekkies just added a major celeb to their side in the Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate. MovieWeb reported on an interview Nicolas Cage did with Yahoo, where he self-identified as a Trekkie when asked about potentially joining the Star Wars franchise. In Cage’s own words, he said “I’m a Trekkie, man,” adding “I’m on the Enterprise.”

Nicolas Cage went on to explain why he preferred Star Trek, saying “I like the political, and the sociological.” While Star Wars did end up diving into the political side of things more in the prequels, it’s definitely not a series known for its social commentary. Star Trek, on the other hand, would often dive into these issues and portray them in nuanced ways.

In short, there’s really no wrong answer when it comes to the Star Wars and Star Trek debate, but it seems like Nicolas Cage is firmly in the Trekkie camp. Hopefully, Cage professing his love for Star Trek could land him a role in an upcoming movie. There are quite a few upcoming Star Trek movies in early development, so Cage could easily get offered a role in any of them.

As of 2020, Paramount confirmed that all of their previously announced Star Trek films were still in development. These projects include an R-Rated film with a story from Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams, the fourth Star Trek film in the Kelvin timeline, a film written and directed by Noah Hawley, and a film with a script from Kalinda Vasquez. Nicolas Cage would probably be perfect for any of these, but the film with the story by Quentin Tarantino be especially awesome for Cage’s talents.

Nicolas Cage is currently having a bit of a late-career Renaissance, so a blockbuster role in Star Trek would be the perfect way to keep things moving. His next film, The Old Way, sees him as an old gunslinger who must face his past in the form of the son of a man he murdered. The film is already out in select theaters and also stars Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Clint Howard, Abraham Benrubi, Nick Searcy, and Noah Le Gros.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula in Renfield

What Nicolas Cage fans are really excited about is the upcoming film Renfield, where Cage will be playing the classic vampire Count Dracula. The film follows Dracula’s henchman Renfield, who decides to leave his long-time job as Dracula’s right hand and move to New Orleans where he ends up falling in love with a girl. The film stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield along with Awkwafina, Snoreh Aghdashloo, Ben Schwartz, Brandon Scott Jones, Jenna Kanell, William Ragsdale, and more.

Currently, Renfield and The Old Way are the only Nicolas Cage movies confirmed to come out in 2023, but he has a lot of other projects on the way that we can likely expect to see next year. Just don’t expect any of those upcoming projects to be Star Wars films. While we wait for Cage to make his appearance as Dracula in Renfield, you can check a theater near you to see if you can catch The Old Way this week.
