The Darkest And Most Disturbing Nicolas Cage Thriller Gets Rescued And Restored
When it comes to picking out a favorite Nicolas Cage film – the possibilities are endless. The man is a true chameleon of genres, able to switch from comedy to horror in the blink of an eye – sometimes literally in the same movie. While many of the actor’s projects have received their fair due in upgrades, those who find Nicolas Cage’s turn as a private investigator obsessed with snuff films in 8mm will be especially happy to find out that it will be one of a handful to land on Blu-ray this summer courtesy of Australian label Imprint Films.
Nicolas Cage In 8MM On Blu-Ray
Beginning on July 31, Nicolas Cage fans will get their shot to own one of 1500 copies of 8mm on Blu-ray. The special release is stacked with extras like audio commentary and an interview with the director, Joel Schumacher, theatrical trailers, a “Making Of” featurette, and more.
And, of course, the quality will be nothing but the very best in both sound and appearance with this hi-def release. Other movies celebrating their arrival on this wave will be Men of Respect, Film Focus: Harvey Keitel, Smoke / Blue in the Face, and The Juror.
Nicolas Cage In A Tough Role
In one of his roughest and toughest roles yet, Nicolas Cage plays a private detective named Tom Welles in 8mm. A family man with a passion for helping those in need, Welles can’t help but answer the call of a widow who found a disturbing snuff film in her late husband’s belongings. The movie depicts the horrendous murder of a teenage girl, which launches Welles into a journey for the truth.
Joaquin Phoenix In 8MM
Co-starring opposite Nicolas Cage in 8mm is Joaquin Phoenix, who plays a video store employee and the police officer’s biggest link between his world and the criminal underbelly of illegal snuff films.
Together, they determine if the movie is real or fake, with Welles ultimately spinning out of control as he gets fully immersed in living his double life.
Other Stars In 8MM
Along with Nicolas Cage as the devoted and – at times – chaotic detective and Joaquin Phoenix as the video store clerk in the know, 8mm also featured performances from stars including James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Catherine Keener (Get Out), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon).
Known for his particular style of filmmaking and storytelling, the psychological thriller was the latest to come from director Joel Schumacher who may be best known for titles including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Phone Booth, and the ever-classic DC flick, Batman & Robin.
Nicolas Cage Was On A Run
As for Nicolas Cage, 8mm is one of the many films dotting the actor’s repertoire during the late ‘90s. It was preceded by the fan-favorite classic Face/Off, as well as the romantic drama City of Angels and Brian De Palma’s thriller, Snake Eyes.
Going into the new millennium, after the box office success of 8mm (which was largely panned by critics), Cage started the decade strong, getting his hands dirty in projects such as Gone in 60 Seconds, Windtalkers, and Adaptation.
Nicolas Cage’s 8MM Coming In Summer
2024 will be a year packed with Nicolas Cage-led titles because, as you wait for the summer release of 8mm on Blu-ray, the actor has been busy at work delivering a fresh batch of masterpieces.
His post-apocalyptic thriller, Arcadian recently hit theaters and is expected to stream on Shudder later this year, while many of us are looking forward to his portrayal of a serial killer in Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs, which arrives in cinemas this July 12.
