NFL Star Tries Out Acting In Gory New Hulu Murder Mystery

Grotesquerie, a new crime thriller on Hulu will star Travis Kelce alongside Niecy Nash. The NFL tight end, who is famous for dating Taylor Swift as well as winning two Super Bowls, gets to try out his acting skills next as he tackles a starring role in a TV series about a series of brutal murders and a journalist-nun who helps to solve it. Produced by Ryan Murphy, the series is a horror-fueled serial killer mystery show that plans to take Travis Kelce along for the ride.

Grotesquerie streaming begins on September 25 on Hulu.

In addition to Niecy Nash, who plays no-nonsense Detective Lois Tryon, Grotesquerie will star Lesley Manville as Nurse Red, Courtney B. Vance as Marshall Tryon, Detective Tryon’s husband, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie alongside Travis Kelce.

Niecey Nash, most famous for her work on Reno 911!, will play a much more serious role as a detective than her role as a bumbling Reno Sheriff’s Department deputy. The cast features several actors in roles that are refreshingly different from their previous work, but none so much as Kelce, who has no previous acting credits besides guest hosting Saturday Night Live.

Starring in Grotesquerie is a step toward the goal of a blockbuster Hollywood career for Kelce, who has also been cast in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 and as the host for Amazon’s new game show, Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?.

While most of the other characters have been introduced in the Grotesquerie Season 1 teaser, Travis Kelce’s role is being kept a secret. His previous on-screen presence is mostly as a football star or on his reality dating series, Catching Kelce from 2016, so it’s hard to guess what his fictional character will be like based on past experience.

While Kelce has a little comedy experience from hosting SNL three times as well as appearing as Kelce in Moonbase 8, a comedy series about astronauts desperately attempting to qualify for a lunar mission, it’s not clear that Grotesquerie will draw on this background for his new character.

He also has a deal with Amazon to bring his podcast, New Heights With Jason and Travis Kelce to Wondery for over $100 million. Gaining momentum in the entertainment industry, Kelce also executive produced My Dead Friend Zoe, a dark comedy about an army veteran who keeps seeing her dead best friend.

Ryan Murphy has been known to make bold choices in casting crossover talent for breakthrough roles, giving Lady Gaga her starring role in American Horror Story: Hotel. His casting choices for Grotesquerie definitely fits within his wheelhouse for giving crossover stars their big start, and Travis Kelce will have the opportunity to show off his acting skills in the series. Murphy, alongside his longtime collaborators Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken are setting Kelce up to tackle a murder mystery horror series as a part of breaking into acting.

Streaming begins on September 25 on Hulu. Grotesquerie is a 20th Television and  FX Productions series. Travis Kelce will appear in all ten episodes of the first season. The trailer promises haunting and brutal crime, twisty mystery, and dark, dreadful drama.
