The NFL Had To Postpone A Game Because A Player Briefly Died On The Field
The NFL postponed a game last night as safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field and had to be administered CPR.
Last night’s Monday Night Football game contained the scariest on-field situation during a live NFL game in the history of the sport. Damar Hamlin, a 24-year-old starting safety from the Buffalo Bills, collapsed shortly after delivering a hit on Cincinnati Bengals starting wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin had to be administered CPR after suffering cardiac arrest and was taken to a local hospital, where he now remains sedated and in critical condition.
Injuries are a part of the NFL, and many are expected throughout the season. However, no one has ever seen a player go down in such a manner. Out of respect for Hamlin and his family, the league made the decision to postpone the game indefinitely, and hopefully, we all get some better news regarding Hamlin’s health in the coming days.
Trainers had rushed out to aid Hamlin after he had collapsed shortly after tackling Higgins. Players and coaches during this NFL game stood there stunned, as they waited for any kind of an update. Unfortunately, Hamlin’s heart had stopped, and he was not able to breathe on his own. Thankfully, the medical staff was able to restore his heartbeat and take him to a hospital.
Players gathered hands and prayed, while there was a massive outpouring online via NFL players, coaches, fans, and everyone in the football-loving community. We have seen broken limbs, concussions, and many grisly injuries on the field, but never one where a young man’s life hangs in the balance. Again, we hope that Hamlin makes a full recovery and that he can return to his family in the coming days.
The NFL is currently in the last two weeks of the regular season, with many playoff implications being laid out by the winners and losers of these final games. The Bengals and Bills are two of the top teams in the entire league, and they were facing off in what was already looking like a Super Bowl preview. However, with Hamlin’s scary injury, the game was put on hold by the league.
The NFL has already made a statement indicating they were postponing the game out of respect for Hamlin and the situation. We are not sure if and when the Bills and Bengals are going to resume play, but we would imagine that there needs to be a more positive word about Hamlin’s health first. We would imagine that many of the players of both teams would not even think about resuming play while Hamlin remains in critical condition.
For now, we can all just hope that Damar Hamlin is going to be just fine and that this cardiac arrest was an anomaly for him. NFL players put their bodies to the test every single week they play, and we are hoping the situation was just because Hamlin had been overworked, and nothing life-threatening is happening behind the scenes. We can all just hope that the update from the league and the Buffalo Bills organization is a positive one in the coming days.
