Another year is upon us, and it’s time to look at the new horror movies coming in 2023. After a banner year that scared viewers with installments from the Halloween and Predator franchises, other directors like Ti West were busy cooking up original characters in X and its prequel Pearl. Looking ahead to 2023, there are a lot of new horror movies in development from notable filmmakers and newbies alike.

Fans of well-established franchises will be in for a bit of a treat in 2023, with additional chapters debuting soon in theaters and on streaming. Audiences won’t have to wait until the spooky season to get their new horror movies fix, with blockbuster thrills starting this week.

Let’s take a look at the most anticipated new horror movies coming in 2023.

M3GAN

M3GAN will premiere in theaters on January 6, 2023.

Possibly one of the strangest and most absurd of the new horror movies releasing in 2023 is director Gerard Johnstone’s science-fiction thriller, M3GAN. Produced by James Wan of Saw fame and Jason Blum, who brought audiences classic horror films like Paranormal ActivityInsidious, and The Purge, their newest venture will see a doll come to life.

Cowritten by Wan and noted horror genre screenwriter Akela Cooper, M3GAN stars Amie Donald as the titular doll who is created by a roboticist (Allison Williams) to be a companion to children. But, of course, the movie takes a horrific turn.

Somewhat similar to James Wan’s other horror movie about a killer doll, Annabelle, the character of M3GAN is a lifelike creation that is meant to help others.

However, in M3GAN, artificial intelligence makes the doll self-aware, and she will stop at nothing to protect one child in particular. Even if that means killing others who stand in her path.

INFINITY POOL

Infinity Pool will release in theaters on January 27, 2023.

Quickly out of the gate this year, Infinity Pool will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January before the movie is released to the general public.

Entering the science-fiction horror genre, Infinity Pool will illustrate the high-class vacation of an elite couple at an all-inclusive fictional island resort. However, their vacation gets interrupted by the dangers that exist just outside of the boundaries of their luxury hotel.

Costarring Alexander Skarsgård, Cleopatra Coleman, and Pearl actor Mia Goth, Infinity Pool is written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the son of Crimes of the Future director David Cronenberg.

Rumored to be a peek into a subculture of extreme tourism that deals with violence and strange horrors, Infinity Pool is one of the new horror movies that will indeed create conversations among moviegoers. Initially going to be released as an NC-17, the film was able to cut some scenes in order to make it fitting for an R-rated audience.

KNOCK AT THE CABIN

Knock at the Cabin will premiere in theaters on February 3, 2023.

When it comes to psychological horror flicks in the same vein as Alfred Hitchcock, there may be no more of a polarizing figure than writer and director M. Night Shyamalan. With incredible works of art like 1999’s The Sixth Sense to recent reflections like 2021’s Old, Shyamalan has had a roller coaster of a career. However, his latest effort will be Knock at the Cabin, featuring two gay leads as they find themselves tangled up in a potential apocalypse.

Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge star as Andrew and Eric, a couple who choose to vacation in a remote cabin with their daughter. What makes Knock at the Cabin one of the new horror movies to look out for is that the family of three is held hostage by strangers who demand they make a considerable sacrifice in order to avoid the pending apocalypse.

Aided by a supporting cast that includes Glass Onion actor Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abby Quinn, Knock at the Cabin is sure to be filled with Shyamalan’s style of twists and turns towards the end of the film.

WINNIE-THE-POOH: BLOOD AND HONEY

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey will premiere its one-night event on February 15, 2023.

An unlikely character for a slasher flick, Winnie-the-Pooh will see his big horror movie debut this year with the release of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey from director Rhys Frake-Waterfield.

Based on the characters created by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard, this new take on the beloved childhood story will take viewers into the demented world of a murderous rampage.

Collider reports that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey was conceived because the character of Winnie-the-Pooh has hit the public domain, and Frake-Waterfield was able to craft a story of his choosing to add to the slate of new horror movies.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey will feature nostalgic characters like Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet as they transform into bloodthirsty creatures enacting revenge for feeling betrayed by Christopher Robin, who has since left for college. Pooh and Piglet set their sights on a group of young women in a remote cabin, and all hell breaks loose from there.

The movie will be released as part of a one-night-only event through Fathom Events, Altitude Film Distribution, Cineplex Entertainment, and Cinemex and might be available to a wider audience after that.

SCREAM 6

new horror movies

Scream 6 will premiere in theaters on March 10, 2023.

Just one year after 2022’s Scream introduced a new collection of characters to the critically acclaimed set of films, Scream 6 will debut as the franchise’s first entry not to include actor Neve Campbell. With a new location in New York City, the Ghostface killings continue to plague former Woodsboro residents Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega).

A case of murders in The Big Apple seems to point to a new killer on the loose, and it will be up to the Carpenters and their friends to make sure Ghostface dies for good this time.

Scream 6 is one of the new horror movies that will most likely be well-received by critics and audiences when it debuts in theaters soon. The Scream franchise tends to be box office gold, and Rotten Tomatoes ranked 2022’s Scream as Certified Fresh with 76 percent on its Tomatometer and an Audience Score of 81 percent.

However, with franchise veterans Neve Campbell and David Arquette not appearing in this newest addition, it will be up to Courteney Cox and the rest of the ensemble cast to make Scream 6 worthwhile for fans.

Hayden Panettiere will reprise her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4, and Scream 6 will see a large cast of young actors. This includes Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Tony Revolori, and industry veterans like Dermot Mulroney, Samara Weaving, and Henry Czerny.

EVIL DEAD RISE

Evil Dead Rise will premiere in theaters on April 21, 2023.

An addition to the supernatural side of the horror film genre, Evil Dead Rise will continue Sam Raimi’s creation within the Evil Dead set of movies. The fifth installment to come out of the franchise, Evil Dead Rise, will depict the story of estranged sisters who get caught up in a battle against flesh-possessing demons.

All of their nightmares seem to be coming true when they are presented with familial issues within these demons, most notably the worst showcase of motherhood possible.

Evil Dead Rise was initially supposed to drop on HBO Max but Warner Bros. Pictures has chosen to release it theatrically instead. One of the new horror movies of 2023, Evil Dead Rise, will costar Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher, and trans actor Morgan Davies.

Franchise staples Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are executive producing this new installment, written and directed by The Hole in the Ground helmer Lee Cronin.

THE EXORCIST REBOOT

The Exorcist reboot will premiere in theaters on October 13, 2023.

Another Jason Blum production to hit the list of new horror movies, this time in the careful hands of director David Gordon Green (Halloween Ends), is a reboot of The Exorcist franchise.

The cast of this untitled reboot film will feature Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. opposite 1973’s The Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn, who is said to be reprising her role as Chris MacNeil. The reboot of The Exorcist is supposed to be the first of possibly three new supernatural horror movies being added to the existing franchise.

Not much is known about the entire cast of The Exorcist reboot, although the movie is intended to feature Chris MacNeil as a consultant to a father who believes his child is possessed. In addition to Odom Jr. and Burstyn, Ann Dowd is confirmed to be part of the growing cast. Universal Pictures will be distributing the movie, which is still filming in Georgia.
