New Gundam Anime Movies Tell Origin Of Franchise’s Greatest Villain
More Gundam compilation films are on the way, as the Gundam.info portal site has revealed that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is getting a “Movie Edition” trilogy. The re-edited three-part trilogy will first be screened in Japan on September 13 in Tokyo, with a country-wide release on October 25. The three-part compilation trilogy was re-edited by the anime’s director, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, as a celebration of the 45th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam’s original TV broadcast debut.
The History Of Char
The first of the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin films is titled Char/Sayla Arc, the second film is titled Kaisen-hen, aka The Outbreak of War Arc, and the third film is titled Loum Arc. The anime first aired from 2015 to 2018 as a six-part anime that aired in theaters and followed the life of the character Char Aznable, also known as The Red Comet, a Zeon pilot who was an antagonist to Gundam protagonist Amuro Ray. It would later air in 2019 as a 13-episode TV anime series recompilation.
Adapting The Re-Telling Of The Original
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is an adaptation of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s manga of the same name, which retells the story of the original 1979 anime TV series. Yasuhiko was also the original character designer for the Mobile Suit Gundam anime. This newly edited trilogy should be a great way for fans to check out the anime and celebrate the original TV series, which has since spawned a massive TV, film, manga, and model kit franchise.
Not The Only New Gundam This Year
Of course, the Gundam franchise is continually releasing new content, so the re-edited compilation films of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin won’t be the only thing fans see in the near future. Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance is an upcoming net animation series that will be done completely with computer animation, a rarity for the franchise, and will use Unreal Engine to create the series. The series is directed by Erasmus Brosdau, written by Gavin Hignight, and is set to be released on Netflix this October 17.
A Classic Take On The Mecha Franchise
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance takes place during the One Year War and follows Red Wolves division Zeon pilot Iria Sorari, who must help defend the European front from the Earth Federation Forces. Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance is co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks and SAFEHOUSE, and its use of computer animation should make it a unique entry to the franchise. Meanwhile, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is a much more classic version of the franchise so that fans will be getting something fresh and something familiar this year.
Gundam’s Amazing Year Of Success
Right at the beginning of the year, fans were also treated to the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, which was a sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. That film was in the works since 2006 and finally released in January of this year, grossing over $32 million and nabbing the title of the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise. Gundam fans have certainly been enjoying a year chocked full of good content, and the compilation trilogy of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin should be the perfect cherry on top.
