New Batman Under Fire For Wearing A Bra Over His Costume In The Flash
The Flash trailer makes it look like Batman is wearing a bra at one point and people online are upset.
The trailer for the DC Universe’s Flash movie was released during Super Bowl LVII and fans are already obsessed with the idea that Batman will wear a bra in the long-delayed film. On Twitter (where this sort of discourse usually happens), many DC fans have discovered a screenshot of the Dark Knight in The Flash in which a supportive netting near the top of his chest makes it look remarkably like he is wearing a brassiere. As one might expect, even the idea of Batman in a bra is causing some consternation among viewers.
Initially, Batman fans were thrilled by The Flash trailer, which featured both Ben Affleck as the Snyderverse Bruce Wayne and the long-awaited return of Michael Keaton as the 1989 version of Batman (especially after his appearance in Batgirl was put on ice). Even more, fans were excited by the catch that the Ben Affleck variant of Batman appears to be wearing a variation on the gray and blue Batman uniform seen in the 1966 Batman television show and Batman: The Animated Series. Then someone perceived Batman as wearing a bra in a briefly-seen action sequence and all hell broke loose.
In fairness, not all fans pointing out the Batman Bra are completely dismissing The Flash out of hand. One contingent is already hypothesizing that if The Flash fails at the box office, it will prompt Warner Bros. Discovery to reactivate the now-defunct Snyderverse and associate this particular piece of Bat-equipment with that in some way. If it were not for the against-all-odds release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, we would have dismissed that out of hand, but it appears anything is possible these days.
At least one fan has gone so far as to compare the Batman bra issue with George Clooney’s notorious be-nippled Batsuit from 1997’s Batman & Robin, long considered one of the more embarrassing elements of a franchise that includes shark repellent and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face. Strangely, some fans also seem to consider Batman and his bra as comparably ridiculous to another revealed element of the Flash trailer:
This particular Twitter user seems to find the image of Supergirl punching a goon to break their suspension of disbelief, which is odd, considering this is a comic book movie involving time travel and multiple parallel realities. It has been pretty well established in virtually every DC continuity that Supergirl’s Kryptonian physiology gives her super strength under Earth’s yellow sun. As such, it does not really deserve to get lumped in with one’s surprise that Batman is wearing a bra.
Of course, it is most likely that Batman is not wearing a bra in the traditional supportive sense, but some kind of tactical equipment whose purpose is revealed in the course of the film. After literally years of delays (not to mention Ezra Miller’s well-publicized personal issues and behavior), The Flash is set to be released on June 16. Hopefully whatever is going on with Batman’s upper torso will be clarified.
