Netflix Western With James Bond Is The Most Intense Movie You’ve Never Seen
A solid Western is always a good way to spend a movie night, and the 2006 film Seraphim Falls is quickly becoming the go-to choice for a lot of Netflix users. The underseen and underrated film stars Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan, and snuck up into Netflix’s Top 10 Movies this week. It may not be the best revisionist Western of its era, but it’s worth the watch.
Liam Neeson Faces Off Against Pierce Brosnan
Seraphim Falls is directed and co-written by David Von Ancken and stars Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Wincott, Tom Noonan, and Ed Lauter. It follows a former Confederate officer named Carver (Neeson) who is on an obsessive hunt for revenge against a Union soldier named Gideon (Brosnan). Interestingly, both Neeson and Brosnan spoke of their love of Western mythology during the press tour for the film, which they picked up while growing up in Ireland.
No One Watched In Theaters
Despite having all of the ingredients for a hit Western film, Seraphim Falls had a pretty muted release. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and then got a limited theatrical release in the United States, only grossing a little over $418,000 domestically. It earned some additional dollars at the international box office, eventually getting a worldwide total of around $1.2 million.
Both Leads Are Fantastic
While reviews for Seraphim Falls weren’t glowing by any means, they were fairly positive overall. The film features some beautiful cinematography, and Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan turn in great performances. However, the film just never got much love around the time of its release.
New Life On Netflix
Now Seraphim Falls is getting a second life on streaming. It’s fair to say that quite a few people who are watching it on Netflix are seeing it for the first time. Seeing Neeson and Brosnan in a modern Western is a treat, and it’s a good watch overall.
Part Of The Western Renaissance
Of course, it probably didn’t help that Seraphim Falls was released during a time when modern revisionist Westerns were getting a boost in popularity. Just the year before, the groundbreaking Brokeback Mountain brought home some major Oscar wins. The year after, heavy hitters like 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood were all released.
Seraphim Falls Found An Audience
All of those films are considered modern Western classics at this point, so it’s not too surprising that Seraphim Falls faded quietly into the background. While Seraphim Falls doesn’t reach the lofty heights of those films, it’s still a worthwhile addition to the revisionist Western canon. Especially now that Westerns are once again getting critical acclaim thanks to films like The Power of the Dog and last year’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Streaming On Netflix
You can’t go wrong when you watch an action film with Liam Neeson. Sure, all of his films can’t be as exciting as Taken, but you know he’s always going to bring a solid performance to the table. Make sure to check out Seraphim Falls on Netflix this weekend if you’re looking for something to watch.
