Knives Out was a smash hit when it came out in 2019, taking the world by storm and prompting Netflix to acquire the rights to future films. It followed Daniel Craig as the renowned detective Benoit Blanc, hired to investigate the death of a mystery novelist.
Exploring themes of class, race, and family it followed Blanc as he unraveled the mystery by observing the victim’s family and his nurse.
Knives Out received a wide theatrical release that brought in a hefty profit and critical praise. The film that launched the franchise was made for $40 million and earned an astonishing $312.9 million at the box office.
It also has a near-perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 97 percent.
That movie was followed up by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. It followed Benoit Blanc as he investigated a new mystery involving a group of affluent self-described disrupters.
While Glass Onion is told from detective Benoit Blanc’s point of view, its predecessor Knives Out unfolds from the point of view of Marta (Ana de Armas), the chief suspect for most of the film.
He is aided in this mystery by Helen Brand, the victim’s twin sister who helps him infiltrate the group during a murder mystery party in Greece.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was made for Netflix after the company acquired the franchise from Lionsgate. Due to the streaming company’s priorities and the COVID pandemic, the sequel received a limited theatrical release which brought in $15 million.
While the box office earnings were lower the film was once again lauded, earning a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a passionate audience.
Rian Johnson and Netflix have had nothing but success with the Knives Out franchise thus far and Wake Up Dead Man will look to continue that hot streak.
More details about the film should be coming soon, with the film slated to come out next year. Until then, fans can only speculate about whether this film will get a theatrical release and who will star alongside Daniel Craig this time around.
