Despite true crime fans sinking their fangs into the endless possibilities of a blood-sucking mystery, the anticipated Netflix vampire documentary Vampires in Gem City will not see the light of day after all and the streamer has offered no explanation. The true crime documentary was poised to investigate an alleged coven of vampires in the city of Dayton, Ohio. Originally greenlit to focus on the unsolved disappearance of a Dayton native, the production eventually shifted towards going all-in on its vampire theme when Joshua Rofé was brought on to replace director David Holthouse in late 2023.

It’s not every day that true crime aficionados get to watch a film about a case with a supernatural twist, so when Netflix announced the vampire documentary in February in 2024, fans were rightfully intrigued.

Vampires in Gem City was described as a true crime doc 30 years in the making, with the nations’s second-largest coven of vampires at the heart of the mystery of the disappearance of then 26-year-old George Phillip Gall.

However, according to The Dayton Daily News, Gall’s family have stated that Netflix executives told them that the project will not be aired following three years of production.

A Possible Dark Fate

In October 1994, Gall was reported missing after he failed to return home following a night out, which was deemed to be out of character for Gall, who had recently become a new father. He was last seen departing a bus near the Asylum, a Dayton-area nightclub that was once known for its goth-theme and affinity for vampire culture.

Believing him to be deceased, Gall’s family held a memorial service for him in 1995, even though his missing persons case officially remained open until he was declared dead by the state of Ohio in 2002.

A Reported Decapitation

In 2008, the case took a very bizarre and supernatural turn when a retired Dayton police officer told The Dayton Daily News that an employee at the Asylum nightclub alleged that Gall was killed and beheaded for a twisted ritual. The Dayton police officer revealed that he had gone undercover inside the goth nightclub as part of an investigation into Gall’s disappearance.

The police officer claims that he collected statements pointing to Gall’s headless body being hidden in an underground sewage system beneath the club, though authorities failed to find any evidence to back up those claims.

The Plan

By 2021, Netflix and Holthouse caught wind of Gall’s cold case and interviewed his family as part of a documentary into the unexplained mystery behind the Dayton man’s disappearance. The primary focus of the true crime documentary was to get to the bottom of what happened to Gall and offer a chance for his family to tell their story.

Gall’s mother, Kathy Gall, who remained a vocal advocate to uncover the truth behind her son’s disappearance until her death in 2016, was to be heavily featured.

Still No Official Word

In yet another twist for Gall’s family, Netflix decided to change directions and brought director Rofé on board to steer the story away from Gall’s family to focus more on a vampire documentary. But after just a few months following the hiring of Rofé, Vampires of Gem City has been permanently shelved. Until an official announcement is made regarding its cancellation, this Netflix vampire documentary gets more mysterious as time goes on.
