There’s a good chance that if you weren’t a sports fan, you might have never heard the name Aaron Hernandez before the ex-New England Patriots player ended up in trouble with the law or even before his docuseries landed on Netflix. The tight end was one of the most promising names in the game when he played college ball for the Florida Gators, but even back then his darker side was already coming into the light. By the time his first NFL draft rolled around in 2010, the uber-talented player wouldn’t be picked up by the Patriots until the fourth round due to the reputation that followed him off the field.

Still, upon his recruiting by the Patriots, the player showed plenty of promise, becoming one of the most revered tight ends in the game. But, that would all come crashing down after just three seasons when his terrible decisions and flaring temper would lead to a murder. As those who tune in for Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez will know, the Netflix docuseries tackles not just the crimes that he was accused and convicted of but also the hopeful career that fell by the wayside.

The Aaron Hernandez docuseries on Netflix puts the mic in front of those who knew the footballer best – including friends and ex-teammates from Hernandez’s childhood to his time playing professional ball. The production also interviews journalists who kept up with the numerous pending cases against Hernandez, and the attorneys who understand and can better explain the ins and outs of the charges he was up against.

As mentioned above, when Aaron Hernandez was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013, he had already made a name for himself as a dangerous figure, something that the Netflix project does a terrific job of breaking down. The series walks audiences through how everything seemed to snowball for the star high school athlete by the time he arrived on the field as a member of the Florida Gators. It also uncovers how pressure from his father and other factors may have played into his lack of growth in decision-making skills.

But even with his father appearing in his life as more of a foe than a friend, the convicted killer had plenty of family ties that helped him through the darkest moments of his life – even if it would prove to be detrimental to them. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the Aaron Hernandez docuseries on Netflix but, when it comes to his family and how they stood by him even when it was against the law, that might be the most shocking segment of all.

In the realm of true-crime productions, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez is one of the best that Netflix has to offer. From the interviews that were procured to the science behind Hernandez’s thought process, the three-part series does a terrific job of putting everything together.
