Netflix True Crime Series Gets Renewed With Most Baffling Mystery Ever

By Douglas Helm | Published

Variety did an extensive interview with Unsolved Mysteries co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer about what to expect in the upcoming season on Netflix, and she gave fans a lot to look forward to. For the upcoming Volume 5, there will be four episodes dropping in October and Meurer teased that, “It is the most baffling mystery of all of them I’ve ever done.” This means that the mystery has to be pretty crazy, given the long history of the series.

What’s To Come Is The Biggest Unsolved Mystery Of All

Unsolved Mysteries

Terry Dunn Meurer has worked on Unsolved Mysteries for over three and a half decades now, with the series first airing on NBC in 1987 before moving to CBS, Lifetime, Spike TV, and eventually Netflix. There have been hundreds of mysteries covered since then, so fans of these true crime cases are sure to be fired up about the most “baffling” mystery yet. Unfortunately, Netflix is keeping tight-lipped about what we can expect from those episodes, but fans can enjoy the five most recent episodes from Volume 4 in the meantime.

From Cold Cases To Cryptids

Unsolved Mysteries

The latest batch of Unsolved Mysteries episodes on Netflix include a case of a severed head, a college student found dead on a stage, and a body found in a basement drenched in blood. Some of the most unique episodes are also featured in this batch, with one episode following the case of Jack the Ripper and another focusing on the West Virginian cryptid known as Mothman. Meurer revealed some especially interesting tidbits about these cases during her interview.

Looking To The Past

Unsolved Mysteries

Meurer talked about how the Jack the Ripper Unsolved Mysteries episode on Netflix is one of the oldest cases the show has ever done, which meant there were no family members of victims to interview for the episode. Instead, she said that they had to find Jack the Ripper historical experts to make the episode and try and solve the long unsolved case. Jack the Ripper certainly is a very old case, as the unidentified serial killer primarily operated during the late 1800s in London, England.

The Mothman Cometh

Meanwhile, Meurer also talked more about the return of Mothman to Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix, as the folkloric figure was previously covered in the vintage episodes of the show. She mentioned that there had been new sightings around the Chicago O’Hare Airport, leading the show to decide to do a “giant update on the Point Pleasant Mothman episode [from 2002].”

She also mentioned that they talked to various air traffic controllers, pilots, and cargo handlers at O’Hare when filming the episode who gave statements about seeing Mothman, though they didn’t want to be interviewed on camera.
