See video game legend Lara Croft as we’ve never seen her before in the upcoming Netflix Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft anime series. Netflix recently dropped an action-packed trailer, and the show looks great. We also get to hear the new voice of the character as Hayley Atwell takes on the iconic role for the first time.
The Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft anime is actually a sequel to the recent trilogy of reboot games by Crystal Dynamics that include Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Collectively known as the Survivor series, the show follows the events of the last game as Croft abandons her friends to go on dangerous solo adventures. However, she is forced to return home when a powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief she has a connection to.

Her pursuit of the thief will take her on a globe-trotting, tomb-raiding adventure. Along with Hayley Atwell, the Tomb Raider anime also sees Allen Maldonado starring as Zip and Earl Baylon reprising his role as Jonah from the video games. This will be the first on-screen adaptation of the video game franchise since the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander, which received middling reviews.

The original video game in the franchise was released on the Sega Saturn in 1996 by Core Design and Aspyr, selling 2.5 million copies and cementing Lara Croft as a video game icon. There have since been 20 games released in the franchise, with the most recent release being a remastered trilogy of the original three games in 2024. While there was actually an animated Tomb Raider TV series released in 2007, this will be the franchise’s first foray into the anime style.
Both the original game series and the recent reboot trilogy have been big critical and commercial successes, and fans will remember the franchise got a major film adaptation in 2004 with Angelina Jolie. After Vikander’s film failed to break even, the franchise took a bit of a hiatus, but the recent influx of quality video game projects has helped green light quite a few Tomb Raider projects, including this anime. Amazon, who recently found success by bringing a Fallout TV series to its streaming platform, will take a stab at adapting Tomb Raider with a TV series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft anime is written by Tasha Huo, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer on the project. Dmitri M Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson, Jacon Robinson, Dallas Dickinson, Noah Hughes, Howard Bliss, Jen Chambers, and Brad Graeber also executive produce. The series is a collaboration between Legendary Television, video game company Crystal Dynamics, dj2 Entertainment, Tractor Pants, and Powerhouse Animation.
