The Netflix Sci-Fi Time-Traveling Anime Filled With Mecha And Cyborgs

By Charlene Badasie | Updated

The 2018 Japanese sci-fi anime Revisions is streaming on Netflix. Directed by Goro Taniguchi, the 12-episode series twists the isekai formula by combining elements of time travel, mecha action, and coming-of-age themes. The story follows Daisuke Dojima, a high school student who, along with his friends Gai, Lu, Mari-mari, and Keisaku, is transported from modern-day Shibuya.

Epic Battles In Revisions

In this future, Shibuya is attacked by monstrous entities called Revisions, which are controlled by a sinister organization. Daisuke and his friends are enlisted by Milo, a member of a covert operation called AHRV, to pilot giant robotic suits called String Puppets to defend their city and prevent the future catastrophe that led to their current predicament.

While Revisions features several epic battles, at its core the story revolves around Daisuke’s obsession with fulfilling a prophecy told to him in childhood by Milo, which said he would save his friends and the world. His determination to live up to this prophecy strains his relationships and reveals a larger sinister plot as the story progresses.

Daisuke And Milo

The relationship between Daisuke and Milo evolves significantly throughout the story. As the series progresses, Milo remains a somewhat mysterious figure who guides Daisuke and his friends in their fight against the Revisions. However, Milo’s role slowly evolves from a simple guide to a more complex character with her own motivations.

Mixed Reception But High Quality

Revisions originally aired from January to March 2019 on Fuji TV’s +Ultra programming block. Written by Makoto Fukami and Taichi Hashimoto, the series was animated by studio Shirogumi. Sunao Chikaoka provided the character designs, which were adapted by Jun Shirai for CG animation. Other essential creative staff included Kazuhiko Takahashi, Takamitsu Hirakawa, Jin Aketagawa, and Akari Saito.

Revisions, which also streamed on Netflix worldwide, received a mixed response. Viewers praised the series for its high-quality animation and mecha battles, while critics were divided on the plot and character development. Others felt that the story was overly complicated, with too many plot twists that detracted from the overall narrative.

Daisuke’s Obsession

Daisuke was also a polarizing character, with some viewers finding his relentless obsession grating and others seeing it as a realistic portrayal of a flawed hero. Revisions’ unique twist on the isekai formula, the series’ exploration of destiny versus free will, was applauded by everyone. Viewers and critics enjoyed seeing an entire city thrown into a new world via time travel instead of a single character.
