Netflix Suspense Thriller Is A Mystery You’ll Want To Solve

The Tourist comes in hot when we’re introduced to an unknown man (Jamie Dornan) who wakes up in the hospital after his vehicle gets run off the road by a cargo truck. He’s lured to a cafe by a woman named Luci, but he has no recollection of anything before his accident. Acting on instinct, he follows whatever clues present themselves to him, hoping to figure out who he is and what happened to him.

Meanwhile, Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) has questions that need answers, as she has reason to believe that the man, now known as Elliot, is in danger due to his past involvement with Luci. Much to the dissatisfaction of her fiancé, Ethan (Greg Larsen), Helen forms a relationship with Ethan and slowly begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Matters get complicated in The Tourist when it’s revealed that Elliot is caught in the middle of a drug-trafficking ring led by a crime lord named Kostas (Alex Dimitriades), who is hunting down Elliot and Lina because they stole a large sum of cash from his operation.

Through the lens of mistaken identity, faulty recollections, and deception at the highest level, The Tourist thrives in delivering a fresh take on a premise that we’ve seen play out countless times before. Despite the narrative’s willingness to move itself forward so unpredictably, the story never loses focus and stays grounded in the real world. By never fully letting the viewer know what happened before the events that take place in the series, The Tourist leaves us guessing what will happen next with each passing episode.

Though The Tourist falls into the drama and thriller wheelhouse, the series is not without a sense of humor. More often than not treading into extremely dark territory, Greg Larsen’s Ethan Krum breaks the tension on more than one occasion with his body language alone.

Across 12 episodes and 2 seasons The Tourist will subvert every expectation and drop your jaw to the floor, all while you unexpectedly find yourself holding back laughter at moments when you probably shouldn’t be. Not unlike Breaking Bad, The Tourist carefully treads the line by injecting comic relief into some of the more intense sequences.

The Tourist is a full-package deal, as it never lets up with its pacing, reveals, humor, and action. The witty banter between Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald is both believable and well-placed in a way that allows viewers to get a quick break from the underlying tense and brooding nature of the main narrative. Critics wholeheartedly agree, which is why both seasons 1 and 2 boast respective critical scores of 97 percent and 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
