Netflix Gets One Of The Biggest Sci-Fi Action Thriller Sequels Of All Time
The Matrix Reloaded is now on Netflix. The sequel to the groundbreaking Keanu Reeves film, The Matrix, is one of the biggest sci-fi action thriller sequels of all time. Grossing an astounding $741.8 million in theaters in 2003, the movie continued the cultural impact initiated by its predecessor and set the stage for the following two movies in the tetralogy.
After The Matrix
The Matrix Reloaded picks up with Neo (Keanu Reeves), now fully realizing his powers as “The One,” as he, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) lead the fight against the Machines to save humanity.
Neo’s journey deepens as he encounters the Architect, who reveals critical truths about the nature of the Matrix and his role within it. And, just like the first movie, the film blends intense action sequences with philosophical undertones, exploring themes of choice, destiny, and reality.
The Cast
The principal cast members from The Matrix returned to reprise their roles for the sequel.
In addition to the return of Reeves, Fishburne, and Moss, who each slipped back into their sleek black uniforms and Kung Fu fighting personas–Hugo Weaving and Gloria Foster also returned to the franchise to reprise Agent Smith and The Oracle, respectively.
New to the cast of The Matrix Reloaded was Jada Pinkett Smith, who played Niobe, a strong and capable captain within the human resistance.
VFX Innovation
Already known for the special effects from the first movie, the Wachowskis, the writing and directing duo behind the franchise, pushed the boundaries of visual effects even further with The Matrix Reloaded.
They introduced “Universal Capture,” a technique that sampled and stored facial details and expressions in high resolution, allowing for realistic CGI reproductions of actors.
This technique, alongside extensive use of the program Mental Ray, enabled the creation of complex action sequences like the “Burly Brawl,” where Neo battles 100 Agent Smiths—marking a significant advancement from the bullet time technology used in the original film.
Box Office
Thanks to the hard work of every artist and creative behind the project, The Matrix Reloaded was a commercial success, grossing $741.8 million worldwide.
It broke several records, including the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time and the third-highest-grossing film of 2003 (the highest-grossing was Finding Nemo, which made $871 million).
The film’s opening weekend gross of $91.7 million set a record for Warner Bros., and its performance internationally was equally impressive, earning over $100 million outside the U.S. in one weekend.

Critics praised The Matrix Reloaded for its action sequences and philosophical depth, but the film wasn’t without its critiques.
Some felt the plot was convoluted and the numerous expository scenes detracted from the overall experience. Still, the movie received numerous accolades for its visual effects and action sequences.
While technology has continued to advance rapidly in the 20 years since The Matrix Reloaded hit the silver screen, much of the CGI we take for granted today couldn’t have been done without the visionaries behind The Matrix franchise having first dreamed it up.
The Matrix is a revolutionary franchise that changed the landscape of cinema forever and The Matrix Reloaded is a worthy sequel.
