Popular Canceled Netflix Series Coming Back?
As with many Netflix shows, The Baby-Sitters Club was canceled before its time. However, after some notable wins at the recent Children & Family Emmys, there may be hope for the series yet. It is rumored Netflix will see fit to give The Baby-Sitters Club another season or even a movie to wrap up any loose ends. Executive producer Rachel Shukert even told Variety, “we’re talking about it in a very preliminary way,” adding “you have to think that infectious energy could carry through to a movie or something like that. Stay tuned.”
The show took home awards for Outstanding Children’s or Family Viewing Series, Outstanding Writing for a Live Action Preschool or Children’s Program, and Outstanding Makeup and Hairstyling. Shukert also talked about possibly bringing the show somewhere else, so maybe if Netflix isn’t excited about making more of The Baby-Sitters Club, another company will be.
Along with Shukert, the other executive producers on the show included Lucia Aniello, Michael De Luca, Lucy Kitada, Sascha Rothchild, Naia Cucukov, Ben Forrer, and Frank Smith, and the author of the original book series, Ann M. Martin. With that many industry professionals working on the show, there’s a good chance one of them could shop it out to another streaming platform.
Netflix ran The Baby-Sitters Club for two seasons before canceling the series. The show was based on the novel series of the same name by Ann M. Martin and followed a group of girls in Stoneybrook, Connecticut who start their own babysitting business. The series starred Sophie Grace, Malia Baker, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph, Kyndra Sanchez, Vivian Watson, Anais Lee, Alicia Silverstone, Mark Feuerstein, and Marc Evan Jackson.
It’s no surprise that the series won some Emmys this weekend, which is why people were confused about Netflix canceling The Baby-Sitters Club in the first place. The show was widely met with critical acclaim and was considered a faithful adaptation of the source material, while also modernizing it for a current audience. With both critical and commercial acclaim, even before it won awards, it was a show that seemed like it was a shoo-in for more seasons.
Walden Media, the production company behind the show, expressed interest in creating more media based on the novels after Netflix canceled the series. Clearly, there are pieces in place for there to be more of The Baby-Sitters Club in the future. Of course, the awards are still very fresh, so it may be a while before any major developments are made.
Still, good news is better than no news when it comes to the chances of Netflix or some other company creating more episodes of The Baby-Sitters Club. Surprisingly, this isn’t even the first time that a TV show based on The Baby-Sitters Club was made. Way back in 1990, HBO and Nickelodeon released a 13-episode TV series based on the novels.
It’s clear that the audience for more seasons is certainly there, and awards are always a good way to show companies that an IP might be worth another look. We’ll just have to wait and see if Netflix thinks that this reception is good enough to warrant another season or The Baby-Sitters Club movie. Until then, you can always head to Netflix and stream the first two seasons.
