Netflix has a new Pride and Prejudice series in the works, but Jane Austen fans should contain their excitement for now. The project is still early in the development process and hasn’t been greenlit by the streaming company yet. Of course, with a legacy of beloved adaptations and the current trend in adapting classic English novels, the series stands a good chance of making it to the screen.

The Netflix Pride and Prejudice series is still early in pre-production, making it uncertain if the show will actually make it onto the streaming platform

Lookout Point, the company behind Gentleman Jack, is producing the Netflix Pride and Prejudice series. The English company has experience in adapting classic literature, having worked on the BBC version of War and Peace starring Paul Dano and Lily James. Dolly Alderton, who created Everything I Know About Love, will write the show.

The Netflix Pride and Prejudice series is still early in pre-production, making it uncertain if the show will actually make it onto the streaming platform. While Dolly Alderton’s scripts for the show are reportedly finished, nothing else has been fully settled. The show is actively working on the casting process, an important step for such a high-profile adaptation.

Netflix does have some experience adapting Jane Austen’s novels, making Pride and Prejudice a logical property to pursue.

If the series is made it could give Netflix a witty period piece romance, as Pride and Prejudice is widely considered one of the best romance novels ever written. Originally published in 1813, it has remained a popular piece of literature ever since, with several adaptations helping to introduce the story to new generations. It centers around the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

Netflix does have some experience adapting Jane Austen’s novels, making Pride and Prejudice a logical property to pursue. In 2022 the streaming company adapted Persuasion with Dakota Johnson as the film’s lead. However, that movie’s poor reception could be a hindrance to getting another Austen adaptation made.

Keira Knightley in 2005’s Pride and Prejudice

If Netflix goes through with its Pride and Prejudice adaptation, it’ll have stiff competition as the novel already has some beloved adaptations. A film adaptation of the novel starring Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadden came out in 2005 and was a huge hit with general audiences and critics alike. A 1995 BBC series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth has also endured for decades as a beloved version of the story.

Netflix may be considering the Pride and Prejudice series due to the current popularity of literary adaptations, particularly focused on novels by English women. An adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie is currently being developed. The BBC also recently announced an adaptation of The Other Benet Sister by Janice Hadlow.

With so many female-focused literary adaptations in the works and the enduring popularity of Jane Austen’s novels, it’s no surprise Netflix is considering a new version of Pride and Prejudice. Other period piece romances like Bridgerton have been major hits for the streaming platform, and an adaptation of Austen’s most famous work could help to build on that success. However, fans should wait for confirmation that the show is being made before they get too excited about seeing how a new version of Mr. Darcy courts a modern Elizabeth.
