Netflix R-Rated Gory Horror Is Fan-Favorite Director’s Most Fun Movie

By Britta DeVore | Published

Even though his latest movie, Borderlands, isn’t quite the hit that he or the studio were hoping for, filmmaker Eli Roth still has plenty of other gems in his long list of credits. The director has largely stuck to the horror genre, having previously stood behind such classics as Cabin Fever and Hostel. But last year, he delivered the full meal with his holiday horror flick, Thanksgiving, and now subscribers can watch it on Netflix.

A Mix Of Young And Established Stars

Featuring an A-list call sheet of talent, Thanksgiving is the perfect addition to your Netflix queue as it includes performances from the likes of Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy), Milo Manheim (Disney’s Zombies franchise), Addison Rae (He’s All That), Rick Hoffman (Suits), Gina Gershon (Bound), and more.

Set in the quiet town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, the movie centers around a masked killer known only as John Carver, who is setting up an unforgettable dinner featuring the body parts of several of the town’s most important people. The movie is a thrill ride from beginning to end with plenty of gross-out moments that Eli Roth has become known for during his career.

A Box Office Success

While it may have seemed like a silly premise to some, Thanksgiving was overall a box office success, raking in $46.5 million against its $15 million production budget before it left theaters and arrived on Netflix. In fact, the movie was so popular that the studio almost immediately greenlit it for a sequel, quickly moving Eli Roth’s latest piece of horror content into franchise territory. Right now, the follow-up is anticipating an arrival in 2025 with Addison Rae attached to make a return.

Originally A Fake Trailer

Thanksgiving’s journey from the metaphoric oven to the metaphoric oven was a long time coming as it was on Eli Roth’s list of hopeful productions for quite a while, giving Netflix subscribers even more of a reason to watch it. Those who tuned in for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 double feature, Grindhouse, may remember seeing a mock trailer for Thanksgiving in between installments. In the more than a decade since Grindhouse came out, Roth had been biding his time and waiting for the perfect opportunity to unleash the madness of John Carver onto the world.

Eli Roth Has Been Keeping Busy

Aside from the turkey-stuffed slasher, Eli Roth has been busy with a handful of movies over the last few years, including Fin, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and Death Wish. However, Thanksgiving is his only movie currently available for streaming on Netflix. As for Borderlands, the Lionsgate film has yet to announce when it will be released onto a streamer, so audiences will need to stay tuned for the answer to that question.

REVIEW SCORE

Quite frankly, we need more holiday-centered slasher movies like Roth’s 2023 feature to give genre fans something to sink their teeth into year-round. Thanksgiving finds itself hitting all the perfect tropes of other similar titles, meaning that Netflix subscribers who appreciate franchises like Scream and Friday the 13th will undoubtedly find something to enjoy with this one.

As we move from the summer and into the fall, the time is almost here for audiences to begin their yearly watch-throughs of their favorite scary franchises and standalone films. If you haven’t seen Thanksgiving, we can’t suggest adding it to your spooky festivities this year enough, especially since it’s now streaming on Netflix.
