Must Watch Netflix Reality Show In Trouble Due To Serious Allegations
Several contestants on the Netflix reality show Physical: 100 have been accused of assault.
Fans of South Korea’s wildly popular Squid Game were excited when a new competition show pitting contestants in a battle of strength and will was announced. Netflix released Physical: 100 on January 21st and it quickly became a must-watch series. However, now the popularity of the show may be in jeopardy with some of the competitors facing allegations of assault, according to Yahoo! Finance.
Recently, two contestants from the South Korean game show Physical: 100 have been accused of assault. The names of the accused have not yet been released, but it has been revealed that one of them is being investigated by Seoul Gangnam Police for possible assault and battery on his girlfriend. Unfortunately, these allegations come as only the most recent to rock an Asian reality show.
Also streaming on Netflix is the popular Japanese dating show Terrace House. This show follows three male contestants and three female contestants as they get to know each other, building friendships and relationships along the way. This show quickly became a cult phenomenon in Japan, with popularity reaching outside of the country as well.
Similar to Netflix’s Physical: 100, Terrace House also faced brutal controversies over its time on the air. The show’s production had to be quickly halted in 2020 after the suicide of former contestant, Hana Kimura. An onslaught of cyberbullying after her season aired was allegedly the reason for Kimura ultimately taking her life.
Her death prompted Japan to release strict anti-bullying legislation. The wildly-popular Terrace House is yet to make a comeback, making fans worried about what the future of Netflix’s Physical: 100 has in store. Unfortunately for fans of the genre, Physical: 100 will be added to the list with Terrace House and Squid Game for being steeped in controversy despite initial popularity.
Upon its release, Physical: 100 quickly garnered a number of fans. The series follows a riveting premise with a feel akin to that of the popular 1990s series American Gladiator. The show pits 100 contestants against each other in tournament-style competitions with a loser being sent home after each challenge.
The show puts a unique spin on the typical physical competition model as each contestant has a background to help them excel in certain challenges. The show features an array of professional dancers, wrestlers, stuntmen, gymnasts, rugby players, and fitness influencers. Each contestant comes with a toned physique and aptitude for athletics.
This gives Netflix’s Physical: 100 a unique touch, as participants from different backgrounds are often pitted against each other. Viewers get to watch as each athlete’s background either helps or hinders them in each challenge. At the end of the series, there is one final winner who takes home the grand prize which is roughly the equivalent of $230,000.
The recent controversies plaguing Netflix’s Physical: 100 do not come as a surprise. Fans of reality TV have come to expect the controversies that follow the shows and their stars. It has become, over the years, a mark of the genre.
For those that hoped Netflix’s Physical: 100 would rise above the allegations following its predecessors, it appears that it is just another reality show in that regard. For now, fans can still enjoy the series on Netflix.
