Netflix Outrageous Supernatural Horror Comedy Brings The Devil To The Suburbs

By Brian Myers | Published

Whoever said dating a person with a child is easy? An overlooked horror comedy from 2017 introduces audiences to an eager new stepfather that slowly comes to the realization that the new kid in his life might be, as the film’s title implies, a little evil. Little Evil is streaming once again years after it first debuted on Netflix.

Nobody Said Being A Parent Was Easy

Little Evil 2017

Little Evil follows Gary Bloom (Adam Scott) in the early stages of his marriage to Samantha (Evangeline Lilly) and his attempts to establish a father-and-son bond with Samantha’s 5-year-old son Lucas. The newlyweds have barely settled into their new lives when odd occurrences begin to make Gary feel like there is something a bit sinister with Lucas.

The principal of Lucas’s school tells Gary that, after being chastised by a teacher for talking out of turn, Lucas told the woman to go to Hell. The teacher jumped out of the window right after and died when she landed on the fence posts below. If this weren’t enough to concern Gary, the clown at Lucas’s birthday party suddenly lights himself on fire.

We Need To Talk About Lucas

Little Evil 2017

Little Evil begins to unravel the mystery around Lucas as Gary and his friend Al (Bridget Everett) dig around and find out that each of Evangeline’s ex boyfriends killed themselves, except for a devout religious man named Gabriel. When Gary and Al find Gabriel, Lucas’s position as the Antichrist is revealed to them, along with the instructions of how he must be killed.

Riffing On Horror Classics

little evil

Little Evil is a brilliant and hilarious riff on the hit 1976 horror film The Omen, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to making subtle homages to the film in the form of story lines, character sketches, and numerous other little references any fan of the classic movie would be sure to catch. For example, the character played by Sally Field, Miss Shaylock, is a spoof of Mrs. Baylock (played by Billie Whitelaw), the protective cult member/nanny from The Omen.

Of course, little Lucas is a funnier, more precocious version of the malevolent Damien from The Omen. But Lucas is only “a little evil,” according to his new stepfather, unlike the David Seltzer toddler that was truly the devil incarnate.

Horror With A Hint Of Buddy Comedy

Little Evil 2017

Reframing The Omen as a dark comedy was set against a high bar in the age of the Scary Movie film franchise. But writer/director Eli Craig vaults over it perfectly and gives audiences a ton of well-earned laughs. Adam Scott and Bridget Everett are a great mystery solving duo that give Little Evil a buddy comedy feel at times and generate most of the movie’s laughs.

But the real credit goes to the young Owen Atlas who portrayed Lucas in Little Evil. At nine years old when the movie debuted, Atlas’s on-screen portrayal of a kid that might be the Antichrist is done with a mastery that is equally humorous and horrifying. The actor has since risen to infamy with his impressive martial arts and stunt skills, earning a black belt Taekwondo.
