Netflix Reveals New Sci-Fi Superhero Series In Enticing First Video

By Douglas Helm | Updated

Netflix introduced its newest upcoming superhero show, Supacell, with an intriguing trailer that gives us our first good look at the Netflix series. The show is written and directed by Andrew Onwubolu, aka Rapman, and follows a group of Black South Londoners who suddenly develop superpowers. Based on what we see in the trailer, it seems these super-powered individuals are stronger when they’re together, and we see some familiar powers like telekinesis, super strength, super speed, and pyrokinesis.

See for yourself in the new trailer that just dropped today.

One man has to bring these superheroes together, protect the one he loves, and avoid the powerful agents who have taken notice of these new super-powered developments.

Supacell is a British production from Netflix UK, which has found global success from productions like The Crown, Top Boy, and Sex Education. It seems like this will be a fresh take on the frankly stale superhero genre, and it might just be able to bust through that superhero fatigue people have been feeling over the past few years. More unique superhero shows like Invincible, Gen V, and The Boys have certainly helped to keep the genre relevant while people are gradually getting tired of seeing superhero projects on their screens.

Outside of the Supacell trailer that Netflix just released, we don’t know too much about the plot of the series. A log line for the series talks about the story following multiple individuals who unexpectedly develop superpowers, with the only clear connection being that they’re all Black. One man has to bring these superheroes together, protect the one he loves, and avoid the powerful agents who have taken notice of these new super-powered developments.

It seems like Supacell will have plenty of mystery and intrigue alongside its superhero action, making it have all the ingredients for a potential hit for Netflix UK. Creator Rapman also seems hyper-aware of superhero fatigue, saying in an interview,  “I know the superhero genre, 100% that’s been done to death, but Supacell is different.” It remains to be seen if viewers agree, but the trailer is promising and Rapman’s acknowledgment of the superhero issue shows that he’s not planning on falling into the same superhero tropes.

The series is set to have six episodes with a runtime of 60 minutes each, so it should be a quick and easy binge for those who get invested in the story.

Fortunately, you won’t have to wait too long to stream this new super-powered series, as it’s set to hit Netflix on June 27.

It’s a bit strange that Supacell hasn’t gotten a bigger marketing push from Netflix before now, but it seems like the streamer is planning on making up for that in the coming weeks. A unique take on the superhero genre could be a recipe for success, especially if there’s a big sci-fi mystery that keeps the story engaging.
