Netflix Bringing Back Its Most Disturbing Crime Series Sooner Than Expected
The last calendar year for Netflix’s true crime slate has been a great one. With its standout hit Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dominating the charts, it hit another high note with the documentary series, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. Now, according to TV Line, the latter production is back for a second season which will land on the streamer on September 20th.
With Alex Murdaugh now behind bars and the main story behind the wealthy and elite southern family already told in Murdaugh Murders, the next installment will follow others close to the case.
Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal will return to Netflix for Season 2 on September 20th
While the premiere season focused closely on friends of the late Paul Murdaugh, this time around audiences will hear from the likes of the family’s ex-housekeeper Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, Alex Murdaugh’s cousin Curtis Edward Smith, Libby Murdaugh’s caregiver Mushelle Shelly” Smith, and even Gwen Generette who served as a juror on Alex Murdaugh’s double murder case.
Returning for more chats with Netflix on the second season of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal will be Wall Street Journal reporter Valerie Bauerlein, Paul Murdaugh’s ex-girlfriend Morgan Doughty, and Paul Murdaugh’s friend Anthony Cook.
Twists and turns abounded in Netflix’s Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal with audiences attempting to keep up as the truth about the troubled family unraveled. We learned about the coverup set up around Paul Murdaugh’s responsibility in the death for Mallory Beach and the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a young local man named Stephen Smith.
But, taking center stage in it all was the double homicide trial of Alex Murdaugh who was found guilty of brutally killing both his son Paul as well as his wife, Maggie.
Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal executive producer Jenner Furst said that while the trial for Alex Murdaugh would come to an end, there were still many unanswered questions about the case
The folks behind Netflix’s chart-topping docuseries always knew that the story could go on if the audience responded positively. During an interview with Variety, Season 1 director and executive producer, Jenner Furst said that while the trial for Alex Murdaugh would come to an end, there were still many unanswered questions about the case.
Not only are the families of Mallory Beach and Stephen Smith without answers and justice but there were also a handful of others wronged by the affluent and powerful family who were left in the lurch.
Along with Netflix sharing the story of the Murdaugh family, other streamers including Max and Hulu have also set out to rake in viewership numbers with the tragic tale of the southern dynasty’s collapse. However, at this time, Netflix is the only platform to have announced a sophomore season.
In fact, Hulu is taking a complete departure from the documentary aspect, instead shifting gears to a scripted series that has yet to set a release date.
While he likely won’t take part in this installment of Netflix’s Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, nor any other similar projects in the future, the family’s eldest son, Buster Murdaugh, is the next closest person to knowing what remains of the family’s secrets.
As for Netflix’s other upcoming true crime productions, audiences are still waiting for more information on when to expect the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster with the sophomore season set to follow the story of the Menendez brothers.
