Multiple Netflix Movies And Series Leak Online Ahead Of Release

By Matthew Swigonski | Published

It has not been a good week for Netflix, which has seen a massive security breach of its content, resulting in several movies and series leaking online. The streaming giant has been in damage control over the last few days, attempting to scrub the unlicensed uploads of its content to various websites throughout the internet. However, it appears that the extent of the Netflix leak is only worsening, with more movies and series being added to the list of pirated content, including Spellbound, Terminator Zero, Plankton: The Movie, Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld, Ranma 1/2, Dan Da Dan, and Fairly Odd Parents: A New Wish!

A Preferred Fulfillment Partner Has Been Breached

On August 8, a Netflix spokesperson delivered a statement to The Wrap. “One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online,” the Netflix statement read. “Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down.”

Although the leak has been traced to IYUNO, a “Preferred Fulfillment Partner” that Netflix outsources tasks like audio dubbing and subtitling their titles to, many industry insiders have pointed to a deliberate security breach of the third party vendor. IYUNO, who also works with Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, NBCUniversal, and RIOT Games, to name a few, confirmed a data breach, but as of this writing its unclear whether we’ve seen the full extent of the leaks, or if more will surface online.

Several Titles Have Been Prematurely Leaked

News of the unprecedented content leak first broke on August 6, when several of the impacted titles were uploaded onto popular sites such as X and 4Chan. Previously affected titles included the entire first season of Terminator Zero being leaked, as well as a handful of episodes of Ranma ½ and Dan Da Dan. Other anime series such as Arcane Season Two and Re:Zero Season Three have all had episodes leaked as well.

According to reports, the Netflix leak hasn’t been limited to just anime series and films. Seven episodes of the third season of Heartstopper, a live-action coming of age romance series, has also been leaked online. The season is scheduled to premiere on the streaming giant on October 3, 2024.

Upcoming SpongeBob Movie Has Been Compromised

In several of the titles involved in the Netflix leak, many can be seen with a watermark superimposed on the footage. Leaked footage from the films Spellbound and Plankton: The Movie have appeared online, each with a watermark visible on screen. Unfortunately, the upcoming Plankton film isn’t the first time that a SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off movie has been affected by a security breach.

Not A Good Year For SpongeBob And Company

In January 2024, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was uploaded to various social media sites months ahead of its scheduled release. Similar to this week’s Netflix leak, the security breach was also blamed on a production company server being plundered. Following its leak, the film eventually made its way to X threads and Discord servers, making it very difficult for Netflix to prevent any further spread of the film.

Not Just Netflix Content Being Leaked

Netflix hasn’t been the only media company to be affected by a severe leak of its programming. On July 30, HBO’s House Of The Dragon had a portion of its Season Two finale leaked online, just five days ahead of its scheduled premiere. A TikTok account gained access to the show’s footage and uploaded 14 separate posts, totaling 30 minutes from the finale.

Although the TikTok account was banned shortly after, the footage from the posts were quickly uploaded to other social media sites. Like Netflix, HBO also blamed the leak on a third party distributor unintentionally allowing access to the footage.
