No streamer seems to do it better these days than Netflix regarding documentaries and compelling docuseries. Known for tantalizing investigations into true crime and real-life occurrences that make audiences think, Netflix knows a thing or two about what it takes to create compelling stories. With prime examples like The KeepersMaking a Murderer, and the recent The Most Hated Man on the Internet, Netflix has become the go-to source for all things non-fiction. So, it should be no surprise that Netflix will unveil a new documentary centered around noted technology genius and controversial figure John McAfee.

According to a report by Deadline, Netflix has agreed to distribute a new documentary that will examine the life of software developer John McAfee and the true crime elements that led to his ultimate escape from the United States. McAfee, who passed away in 2021, was the founder and creator of the infamous McAfee Anti-Virus software, the first of its kind sold to almost every home in America. As computers became personal devices for families all over the world, anti-virus software was needed to add a layer of virus protection from hackers and nefarious individuals attempting to steal information.

John McAfee was a polarizing figure of the late 20th Century and into the early 21st Century, which will most likely be discussed in Netflix’s upcoming Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee. According to The Wall Street Journal, McAfee died in Barcelona, Spain from an apparent suicide in 2021. At the time, the two-time Libertarian presidential candidate was being held in a Spanish prison awaiting extradition to the United States for tax evasion. The software developer had resigned his position at McAfee Associates in 1994 and had become a suspect in the death of his neighbor Gregory Faull.

During and after Gregory Faull’s murder in 2012, John McAfee was living in Belize. According to The U.S. Sun, Faull had complained about McAfee’s dogs and was eventually found dead of a gunshot wound to his head. McAfee had alleged that Faull had poisoned his dogs and became a person of interest to local law enforcement at the time. McAfee fled Belize only to be deported to the United States. He was never charged with murder or any other crime relating to Faull’s death. Still, as the Chicago Tribune reported last year, McAfee was instructed to pay $25 million to Faull’s family after they filed a wrongful death claim. It appears that due to McAfee’s suicide, he never paid Faull’s estate what it was owed.

The upcoming Netflix documentary about John McAfee’s life, Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee, is sure to cement the software developer’s legacy juxtaposed with his time as a fugitive and criminal actions. The trailer for the film is currently available on YouTube, highlighting all of the true crime events mixed with archival footage and a behind-the-scenes look at a man struggling to survive when the world seems to be crashing down around him. Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee will be streaming on Netflix on August 24th.
