The Netflix Dark Thriller Is Clint Eastwood’s Final Excellent Action Movie
Clint Eastwood has a long and storied career, giving us some of the best Westerns of all time. While Eastwood may have become a huge star through his work in Westerns, don’t overlook his contributions to the politician thriller genre. One underrated film from Eastwood’s oeuvre is the 1993 film In the Line of Fire, which you should check out before it leaves Netflix on January 31.
In The Line Of Fire Streaming On Netflix
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by Jeff Maguire, In the Line of Fire stars Clint Eastwood as a former Secret Service agent who is tormented by his failure to protect President John F Kennedy after being part of the detail that was assigned to him at the time of his assassination. However, he requests to be put back in action after receiving a mysterious phone call from a man who says he’s planning on assassinating the current President.
A Stellar Cast
In the Line of Fire has a star-studded cast that includes John Malkovich, Rene Russo, Dylan McDermott, Gary Cole, John Mahoney, and Fred Dalton Thompson, along with Clint Eastwood. Unsurprisingly, the film turned out to be both a commercial and critical success. In addition to making around $187 million at the box office against its $40 million budget, it was praised by both critics and audiences alike.
Awards And Accolades
While In the Line of Fire didn’t nab any Academy Award nominations for Clint Eastwood, it was nominated in three other categories for Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Interestingly, the film also made some early Internet history by being one of the first films to have a trailer made available online. The trailer was released on AOL and downloaded 170 times within a week and a half.
It’s funny to imagine In the Line of Fire’s trailer getting downloaded 170 times being a significant number, especially since a new Clint Eastwood trailer would likely get millions of views in the same span of time. Obviously, things have changed in the digital age quite a bit since then, but this film still stands the test of time. If you’re looking for a quality political thriller, then you really can’t go wrong with this one.
Eastwood’s Future
Since In the Line of Fire came out in 1993, Clint Eastwood has stayed plenty busy directing, producing, and starring in numerous films. However, Eastwood did announce that his upcoming directorial feature will be the last film he makes before he retires. It will be Eastwood’s 40th directorial effort as he approaches his 94th birthday in May this year.
Clint Eastwood’s upcoming final film is titled Juror #2 and follows a man serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial who struggles when he comes across information that could sway the verdict. Eastwood directs the feature that stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Toni Collette, Kiefer Sutherland, Gabriel Basso, Leslie Bibb, Chris Messina, and JK Simmons. Unfortunately, we won’t get to see Eastwood starring in his final feature.
Revisit One Of Eastwood’s Best
Since Clint Eastwood has called it quits on acting, now is a great time to revisit In the Line of Fire. It’s a great showcase of why Eastwood is one of the most beloved and consistently great actors of our time. Make sure to check it out before it leaves Netflix at the end of January.
