The Netflix Jim Carrey Underrated Comedy Cracking Up A New Generation
The 2014 comedy film Dumb and Dumber To is currently number three on the Netflix streaming chart. Directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, it is the third installment in the Dumb and Dumber franchise and a direct sequel to the 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. The movie stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels returning to their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, respectively.
Dumb And Dumber To Brings Back Original Stars
Dumb and Dumber To picks up 20 years after the events of the first film. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) is in a mental institution after discovering that Mary Swanson is married at the end of the first movie. His friend, Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels), visits Lloyd regularly only to find out that Lloyd has been faking his condition the whole time.
Road Trip Comedy
Harry reveals that he needs a kidney transplant, and Lloyd discovers a letter from Harry’s old flame, Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner), indicating that Harry has a daughter he never knew about, Penny (Rachel Melvin). The duo sets off on a road trip to find Harry’s daughter, believing she might be able to donate a kidney to him.
Along the way, they get involved in a convoluted plot involving a scientific convention, a wealthy family, and a villainous couple trying to kill them. Dumb and Dumber To features numerous gags and callbacks to the original, with Harry and Lloyd’s cluelessness driving much of the humor. However, the film struggles to recapture the charm and wit of the 1994 movie.
Loose Plot Is An Excuse For The Gags
While there are moments of genuine hilarity, much of the humor feels forced and overly reliant on crude jokes that don’t always land. Moreover, the plot serves as a thin framework for a series of loosely connected gags. Despite its flaws, Dumb and Dumber To delivers what fans of the original might expect – a reunion with two lovable idiots who bumble through life with reckless abandon.
Not As Well-Received As The First
It’s a fun, if not particularly memorable, sequel that will likely appeal more to nostalgic audiences than new viewers. Ultimately, it’s a mixed bag of laughs and groans, but seeing Lloyd and Harry back together is a joy. Due to its mediocre plot, Dumb and Dumber To received mixed to negative reviews from critics and still holds a 30 percent rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Carrey Had To Be Convinced To Return
Jim Carrey was initially reluctant to return for the sequel but was convinced after meeting Jeff Daniels and the Farrelly Brothers. After Dumb and Dumber To, Jim Carrey appeared in the 2016 dystopian thriller The Bad Batch from director Ana Lily Amirpour. His role as The Hermit was a departure from his usual comedic characters, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

REVIEW SCORE
In 2017, Netflix released the documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, which explored Carrey’s immersive method of acting during the filming of the 1999 movie Man on the Moon, where he portrayed comedian Andy Kaufman. The documentary offered a deep look into Carrey’s psyche and his process as an actor. Fans of the actor can catch him on Dumb and Dumber To, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
