There’s just something about the power of Netflix that can turn a flop into a hit or give an already played-out and canceled show a breath of new life. This week’s big rags to riches story is that of Saw franchise installment Jigsaw which is getting a second chance on the streamer where it currently sits in the number 5 position. The movie, which served as the eighth title in the fan-favorite horror series, may have been a flop with critics but Netflix subscribers are thrilled for a little summer scare courtesy of the Peter and Michael Spierig brothers’ 2017 release.

Here Comes The Torture

It’s another round of horrific and life-threatening sequences in the plot of Jigsaw as a group of presumed strangers awaken in a barn where they’re forced to play a dangerous set of games to escape with their lives.

This storyline runs concurrently with another that sees two police detectives investigating a strange string of murders that seem to have been staged by the infamous Jigsaw Killer.

There’s just one problem – he’s been dead for nearly a decade – forcing the officers to throw away everything they think they know and backtrack on previous findings.

The Pitch

Jigsaw was the rebirth of the Saw franchise after the installment to come seven years before it, Saw 3D (which is exactly what it sounds like), was announced to be the final movie of the series.

But, after Jigsaw’s writers, Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger pitched their idea for the follow-up title to Lionsgate, the studio couldn’t help but give it a green light, thus continuing the story of John Kramer and his sadistic games.

The project featured largely new-to-the-franchise actors, save for Tobin Bell who will forever be associated with the horror movies as Jigsaw.

A Financial Hit

Just when it seemed as though audiences were getting bored with the world of Saw, Jigsaw sliced and diced its way into theaters, earning a whopping $104.2 million at the global box office, easily covering its $10 million production budget.

In Hollywood, money is certainly the voice heard the most but if you listen to critics and fans, Jigsaw is a movie that could have easily been passed on for something else. Many long-time fans were upset with Lionsgate’s decision to push forward with the feature-length series, feeling that Jigsaw sullied the name of a once good thing.

Spiral

Giving the story of John Kramer a short yet restful break, Jigsaw would be the final movie to come from the Saw series until four years later, in 2021, when Darren Lynn Bousman hit audiences with a standalone film titled Spiral.

Led by Chris Rock, Spiral served as an off-shoot that followed a copycat killer who picked up the mantle of Jigsaw and continued with his sick games. Somehow the movie ended up less popular than Jigsaw, and it seemed the final nail in the Saw coffin was finally hammered into place.

Stream It Now

Of course, we know this wasn’t the case as last year audiences welcomed Saw X which opened up the floodgates for Saw XI to go into production. The eleventh film in the Saw series is expected to cut into cinemas in 2025. For now, Netflix subscribers can get caught up on the story that resurrected the franchise with Jigsaw now streaming.
