Netflix Horror Western More Violent Than R-Rated Stars Incredible Actors

By Christopher Isaac | Updated

When it comes to great Western films, people will be quick to name a lot of the classics starring the likes of John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. But there have been some stupendous ones more recently as well, provided you do not mind your Westerns dabbling in other genres. One such hidden gem on Netflix is the 2015 horror Western Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell.

Kurt Russell Returns To Westerns

When people hear of Bone Tomahawk, they have probably heard about some of the movie’s infamously brutal death scenes. However, those details overshadow how solid of an overall movie it is. Kurt Russell gives a very strong performance as the lead character, Sheriff Franklin Hunt. And this is not even his first time acting in a Western, as he was also in the ‘90s classic Tombstone.

The Plot Is Simple

The plot of Bone Tomahawk begins with two individuals inadvertently trespassing on a Native American burial site. It just so happens that the tribe that calls that area home is particularly vicious and known for being cannibals.

One of the men escapes to a nearby town seeking sanctuary, but members of the tribe pursue him and now know the location of the town. They begin targeting the residents, leaving Sheriff Hunt no choice but to take action to put a stop to it.

Small Budget, Big Stars

Like many Western films, Bone Tomahawk has a very simple story and motivation for the characters, with the focus instead on strong character development. In addition to Kurt Russell, the movie also features performances from Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Matthew Fox (Lost), and even David Arquette (from the Scream franchise). Bone Tomahawk packs a surprisingly talented cast into a smaller-budget film, made for less than $2 million.

What Makes It A Horror

While the dialogue and character interactions in Bone Tomahawk all feel very fresh and unique, there is no discussing the movie without commenting on its violence as well. When Sheriff Hunt and the posse he rounds up do finally track down the Native American tribe causing so much trouble, they encounter the monstrous looking Troglodytes.

This brutal tribe has modified their own bodies to enable them to roar like animals and have tusks and bones implanted in their skin. Sheriff Hunt soon witnesses first hand how viciously the Troglodytes dispatch intruders into their land, making for one scene that is commonly viewed as one of the most violent deaths in any movie. Scenes like this make Bone Tomahawk a cult classic among horror fans as well as Western fans.

An Award Winning Film On Netflix

REVIEW SCORE

Bone Tomahawk was popular enough to earn Kurt Russell a Best Actor award at the 2016 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Russell does not typically dabble in the horror genre, so it is an interesting departure from his usual roles. Critics also praised how unique and ambitious the film was, especially on such a small budget.

If you have not seen Bone Tomahawk, it is certainly worth a watch on Netflix for something unique from most movies. Even if a cannibal Western movie is not your typical genre, it is guaranteed to be a movie you will not forget.
