The Netflix Horror Series Adaptation That Is Perfect

Live-action webcomic adaptations don’t always turn out well. It’s hard to make something cartoonish look lifelike without any problems. However, the horror webcomic Sweet Home by Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang was given a perfect adaptation despite it not following the story exactly.

Neighbors Unite Against A Nightmare

Sweet Home is a story about an apartment complex. When humans start to turn into savage monsters focused on killing each other and the humans who haven’t turned yet, people fight to survive. The living neighbors in this apartment complex work together to try and find a safe space to live while remaining human.

Some of the cast playing the neighbors fighting for survival include Song Kang (My Demon), Lee Jin-wook (Nine: Nine Time Travels), Lee Si-young (The Birth of the Rich), and Park Gyuyoung (A Good Day to Be a Dog).

The Blessing Of The Original Creator

The live-action adaptation of Sweet Home isn’t a perfect adaptation. However, this was done on purpose for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that the original authors said that they didn’t want the TV series to perfectly follow his work.

One author, Kim, did admit that he was a little worried. He didn’t necessarily doubt the director, Lee Eung-bok (Mr. Sunshine), but the ability of Korea to handle the unique genre. According to Kim, this was the first monster genre drama to be made in Korea, and he wasn’t sure if the director could grasp it.

Created With The Input Of The Original Writer

Director Lee Eung-bok had several talks with the writers to ensure that they were happy with the story. While they didn’t know the exact direction in which the Sweet Home live-action would go, the two parties talked enough about the important topics that both felt comfortable with the adaptation.

However, after watching Sweet Home, both authors enjoyed it despite all the differences. When asked about how he felt when it came to fan disappointment, Kim had this to say: “I’ve come across fans’ responses and gotten messages on social media as well. I think there’s something to gain in every loss, so Hyeon-su’s part may have been downplayed a little, but I think that lets other characters’ diverse relationships develop into unique monsters.”

Respects The Spirit Of The Original

Personally, I liked the Sweet Home adaptation. I expected not to like it, mainly because it was a live-action. However, the monsters, while not exact, were pretty cool and rather creepy. The characters were a little different, which was a little disappointing.

However, the story was still intriguing despite all the changes. It’s a great show that really embodies the heart of the original Sweet Home webcomic while also standing out as its own story, which I think is pretty impressive.
