Netflix Gets The Best Godzilla Movie New Fans Need To See Now
When Godzilla Minus One first premiered back in December of 2023, the film became an instant international hit, drawing American audiences to theaters like no Toho Studios outing ever has before. In the brief eight months since its release, the film has already amassed impressive accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and a global box office figure of over $115 million. Now, the epic film is being re-released to Netflix with a brand new black and white look, under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.
Save The Date For Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will premiere on Netflix on August 1, according to What’s On Netflix, much to the excitement of fans everywhere. While it may not sound like much of a significant change at first, Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki has assured audiences that the new cut was constructed shot-by-shot, comprising an entirely new edit. The black and white stylization has been developed to pay homage to the original Godzilla films of the 1950s, plus it contains the added bonus of making the footage look period-accurate to the era in which the film takes place.
A Story About Survivor’s Guilt
For those who have not yet seen the film, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color centers on a World War 2 kamikaze pilot named Kōichi Shikishima, who returns home after the war due to his decision to flee from his duties. Though Shikishima is ashamed of his inability to follow through with his death mission, he is even more dismayed upon returning to his Tokyo home, where he learns that his family and many of his friends have died at the hands of American bombs.
Enter The Titular Monster
Picking up the pieces, Shikishima constructs a found family of orphans and other displaced refugees, just as the people of Japan face their greatest threat yet, when Godzilla rises from the ocean to wreak havoc on the island nation.
A More Intimate Experience Than Its Colored Counterpart
Godzilla Minus One offers one of those unique cinematic experiences that simply demands to be seen on the big screen at least once. Of course, there’s no telling how the updated visuals of Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will change the overall vibe of the movie. According to Takashi Yamazaki, the new cut of the film was reconstructed with a monochrome pallet specifically in mind, which should theoretically make the experience more intimate, providing a kind of documentary style.
Netflix Release And Physical Media
While the film will almost certainly still offer massive set-pieces which couldn’t be achieved by documentary filmmakers, fans around the globe are certainly excited to double back on Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color once it reaches Netflix to see just how much it differs from the original version. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out, as the film is on pace to premiere on the streamer on August 1.
DVD and Blu-ray copies of Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color are expected to release later this year as well, for those who prefer to collect physical media, or those in search of additional bonus features that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible through Netflix.
